Dick Van Dyke got his start in a most unusual way. During World War II, when most young men were being drafted, Van Dyke was denied enlistment for being underweight. He was finally accepted for service—but only as a radio announcer. The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor eventually transferred to the Special Services—the entertainment branch of the U.S. military—where he spent his time entertaining troops across the country.
“I became a disc jockey at 17. [Then] my buddy and I came out here [to Los Angeles] in ’47 with a comedy act, and one thing led to another—I never got out of the business,” he explained in an interview with Harry Connick Jr. in 2017.

The comedy act, called Eric and Van — the Merry Mules, toured the nightclub circuit on the West Coast before finally landing a local TV show in Atlanta called The Merry Mules in the 1950s. Soon, Van Dyke began to get noticed as a solo comedian and then as an emcee of a comedy program on WDSU-TV New Orleans Channel 6 (NBC).
A significant turning point came when an old Army friend who was working for CBS recommended Van Dyke to the network, and the future comedy legend was signed to a seven-year contract. He appeared on two episodes of the CBS series The Phil Silvers Show before becoming a comic performer on The Pat Boone Show and The Andy Williams Show.
But his first big break arguably came off-screen, when Silvers writer Aaron Ruben recommended him to director Gower Champion, landing Van Dyke the role of Albert F. Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway. The part earned him a Tony and secured him the lead in the Emmy Award-winning The Dick Van Dyke Show, which aired on CBS from 1961 to 1966.
