Derek Hough shares what he took from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ”set
The "Dancing With the Stars" judge is dishing on the blink-and-you'll-miss-them parts he and his sister Julianne had in the film franchise's kick off.
Derek Hough is coming clean about a bit of youthful thievery.
"Did you know [Julianne Hough] and I were in the first Harry Potter film?" he wrote in the caption of a recent Instagram post. "We spent three months in the Great Hall, the Forbidden Forest, and even the Quidditch pitch!"
The Dancing With the Stars judge shared a video featuring two scenes in which viewers can glimpse him and his famous sister. Derek can be seen walking behind Emma Watson's Hermoine and briefly turning to chat with a classmate, while Julianne can be seen prominently cheering on the sidelines of a Quidditch game.
He wrote that it was "incredible to be part of such a historic moment. And I may have 'accidentally' taken a Ravenclaw robe, scarf, tie, and a few pieces of silverware from set... but shh, don't tell! Just a little holiday magic and nostalgia to share with you all. Happy holidays."
The Houghs have been mainstays on DWTS since its early days (Julianne joined the cast as a pro in season 4, and Derek was cast in the same role the season after). While both of their careers are heavily tied to the series, they appeared in plenty of other films, series, and stage productions both before and since.
Chris Columbus's 2001 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was their joint acting debut, and neither would appear on screen again for at least five years. The Harry Potter books were massive bestsellers at the time, so it wasn't surprising how successful the films turned out. But the Houghs surely couldn't have predicted just how auspicious a debut the film would be for both of their careers.

Hough recalled the experience of his Harry Potter debut to Entertainment Weekly in 2018. "We were at Pinewood Studios for three months," he said. "We attended school in these trailers, and then we just messed around and got into trouble. We'd have dance-offs during breaks in our full robes. We'd battle it out in between takes! I was a Ravenclaw. Since I was a blond kid, I would be a stand-in for Draco Malfoy. That was my claim to fame!"
Remembering his one on-camera moment, Hough described the "specific scene where Hermione is leaving for Christmas while carrying her suitcase. We pass in the hallway. I was holding an owl. That's my big moment. I'm right in the camera's viewpoint, so every time you look at Hermione, you can see me, clear as day."
As for his sister, "Julianne got to be in the Quidditch match scene. She had a crush on Daniel Radcliffe. She wrote him a love letter and sent him a teddy bear. They were like 12 years old."
The Houghs are now Emmy-winning media moguls — not bad for a couple of Ravenclaw and Gryffindor extras.
