“Deal or No Deal Island”'s Rock Carlson blames women's alliance for downfall
The ousted player also explains his strategy against the Banker.
Rock got rocked. And by a banker, no less.
65-year-old Rock Carlson wanted to go up against the Deal or No Deal Island Banker this week, and it appeared to be a good move when the correctional officer and parole agent entered the Temple and nabbed two different offers with a 75 percent chance of staying. But, ultimately, the numbers were not in his favor, as Rock’s accepted offer of $250,000 turned out to be a bad deal once it was revealed that he held the $1,340,000 case.
What does Rock make of his failed negotiation? How does he feel about CK getting Parvati and Phillip using the Banker’s Bonus to take him out? And did he ever get that Cybertrunk? We spoke to Rock to get the full scoop.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Let’s start here. You do the excursion this week, get your $820,000 case, and pair up with Lete. Then Phillip and Parvati have the power to split up a pair, and CK runs over there and tells them to split you and Lete up so that you will be vulnerable. What do you make of that move by CK in terms of clearly targeting you?
ROCK CARLSON: I felt that there was a woman's alliance taking place, and I heard my name a couple of times before we even got to where we set up our briefcases. So I thought, “S---, there is a woman's alliance.” So when I saw her going back and forth to Parvati, I thought for sure they were talking about it. But then again, I wasn't quite sure because I couldn't hear. I was going to run over and try and jump into the conversation, but I thought: I'm just going to play it cool.
So anyway, then she splits me and I thought, “S---, I'm back on a god dang bottom again. So immediately I wanted to play the Banker because the other two bottom were female and hey, if one of them wins. I know I'm gone. So I wanted to basically play my game, but at first I was like, “What the s---'s going on now?”
Was the female alliance real or was it just your imagination?
I don't know.
You don't know?
I don't know until I hear something different. But they started grouping a little bit.

Were you a CK fan while playing? What did you make of her and her approach?
I was everybody's fan at first. You've got to really watch 'em and see. My thing was I was coming in low and under the radar. I saw Parvati and Dr. Will, and I thought, “Oh my God, here's some big ones.: So my whole thing was I wanted to see whose car each one was riding in. Who's the driver, who's the passenger who's in the backseat? Well, right off the bat Parvati and David were riding a convertible with the baby chair for Dickson. So I was more staying back and observing everything that was taking place. I didn't jump into the mix from the beginning to try and do something. I was laying back around the backside watching everybody and trying to strategize who was with who before I started playing a little bit tougher and a little bit more.
That was basically where I was at at that point. So with the women's alliance, when I saw CK talking to a couple of them, and then they started to scatter a little bit when David walked up. They didn't know I was watching. My head was on a god dang swivel. So I was trying to observe everything that was taking place. I mean, that's just the way I am in real life too. I watch everything. So I jumped to say I wanted to play the Banker, because I knew that if one of those two women won, I was going to be gone.
You turned down the first offer from the Banker when you had a 75% chance of making a good deal, but then took the second offer with the same odds. So take me through the thinking there.
I knew all my family members were high value cases, and I know I had a high dollar case in mine. So I'm like, “No deal. Screw it.” At the same time, when people aren't putting money up on the board, they got to go. Because the whole key is putting money on the board for either myself or whoever else wins. And you got to be a team player on a lot of that stuff outside of the selfishness and trying to take it all the way down.
And bless Luke's heart, I mean, he was out of his realm with this because he had no idea about any type of reality TV, but the guy was honest. So my focus was, “Okay, I'm going to play it again. There's still a lot of lower numbers left, so what's my chance?” But I still knew I had that other bigger case, I felt it in my heart. So going through it, then I took it and everything worked out great. And here it is again, 75% chance.”

You said you really thought you had the 1.34 million case. So in that case, why not just ride it all the way to the end?
Because thinking isn't a hundred percent, man.
Right, it’s just a gut feeling.
My odds were better. But there was another part on this, and people can say, “Oh, that was the most stupidest thing I ever heard in my life,” but this is where I was at. I'm a real family guy. I love my family. There's nothing more important in the world than my family. So I hit 'em with all my family numbers and everything else the best I could to get 'em in. There were three cases left, but number 11 was still up there and I lost my brother in November. The way they had that thing, the lights were so bright on those last three numbers and the other two were my mother and father. So they're all gone.
If I play to get the $1.3 million, I'm a hero, but deep down on the side of my heart, I'm outside a lot. I love the nights. I look up at the stars and I could see those bright stars and know what I did in my heart was right because I wanted to. On the other side of it, I had a 75% chance. So I took one for the team. I knew I was going to be walking.
It's interesting because allegedly, you want to pull off low number cases to build a higher offer for the pot. But I think it's actually the opposite and you want to pull the high number cases down because your odds for staying are so much better. It seemed like you were having this terrible game against the Banker, but I'm like, “He's having a great game! He’s going to get great odds on his offer!”
Yeah, absolutely right! I mean, that's the biggest thing. But hey, I did what I wanted to do. It was my game. Listen, brother, 66-years old now — how many more chances are you going to get a bite of the apple like that? And believe me, I was never pressured by any of those clowns up there to go or stay because hey, hey, ain't no one going to pressure old Rock dog. Nobody.

What was it like partnering up with Sydnee on second excursion with the crate you had to cut down?
Well, I'll tell you, Sydnee was a little bit upset when David jumped with Dickson. And again, I'm staying in the back wanting to see who's going to group up. And so Sidney was left. Anyway, she was in control and the boss, and we jumped out, and I saw Lette and MG’s case sitting there and they ran right by it. But we were there first. I'm like, “Let's just take this one.” She goes, “No, it's not our case.” And so I had to cut that damn branch. And that was about a 30-minute cut, man, believe me. I didn't care about the scorpion biting me or anything else. Carlsons don't quit! Let it bite me, man!
And then we went back and we were on the bottom. But I was in no position to play with her with the Banker because she started having the breakouts and all this stuff and she just… poor thing wasn't in her right mind. And I was like, “There's no way I can play it with her. No way.”
Did you get the Cybertruck yet?
Nah, no Cybertruck. That was all a joke, man. Everything was — just like Naked and Afraid. I ain't applying for Naked and Afraid. I was just throwing out stuff to keep the audience laughing. I didn't give a rat's ass anything about anything else except for having a good time and staying true to myself. But no, I'd love to get a Cybertruck.

You’ve been a reality TV fan for a long time so what was it like being on the other side of it all?
My mouth didn't write no checks that my ass couldn't cash. I'll tell you that much. And before I went that night, they were all coming at me like the roaches at night, diving out of the thing when the lights come on, “Whatcha going to do? Whatcha going to do? Whatcha going to do?” And I wasn't going to tell anybody what I was going to do because of the fact I really didn't know what I was going to do.
And you never know if you're going to come back into the game. So why would I want to say “I'm going to take out Dr. Will. I'm going to take out David”? Why would I even say that? Because of the fact that if I come back into the show, there's even a bigger target on my ass because I mentioned them. You just don't do that. I wasn’t going to give up the goods to anybody, man.
But I said to them “There's going to be a giant line drawn in the sand right now. Chaos is going to break out after this episode whether I'm back or not. So you guys better watch your asses. You better watch what you're saying. Honeymoon period's over. The bathroom door is open and the toilet seat is up. So you guys better get ready for some excitement coming.” So we'll see what happens next.
