Deadpool & Wolverine will be just as bloody and violent as the first two movies starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth.

The Motion Picture Association’s Classification and Rating Administration announced on Wednesday, June 5, that the film has officially been rated R for “strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references." It is the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to earn an R rating.

The first two Deadpool movies, released in 2016 and 2018, were both rated R and released by 20th Century Fox. Deadpool & Wolverine is the first film in the X-Men franchise since Disney acquired the studio, and will be integrated into the MCU.

Considering Disney is better known for family-friendly fare, even Reynolds admitted he was surprised the company allowed him and his collaborators to make an R-rated Deadpool movie.

“I hope it doesn’t sound condescending, I’m really proud of them for doing this. I think it’s a huge step for them,” Reynolds, 47, told Variety in May. “I mean, it adds a whole other color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people that they have been entertaining forever.”

“I was surprised though, that they let us go as hard R, but very grateful,” the IF actor continued. “I mean there’s no other way to do it.”

Deadpool & Wolverine co-stars Hugh Jackman as the clawed mutant Wolverine, a character he’s been playing for over two decades. Morena Baccarin is returning as Deadpool’s fiancée Vanessa, while Emma Corrin joins the cast as the villain Cassandra Nova. Shawn Levy directed the movie.

Although the plot of the film involves the Time Variance Authority prominently featured in the Disney+ series Loki, Levy told The Associated Press that moviegoers don’t have to be completely steeped in MCU history to enjoy Deadpool & Wolverine.

“I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world,” the director said in April. “But I didn’t want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research.”

Reynolds and Jackman, 55, previously worked together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in which Reynolds played Deadpool onscreen for the first time. The two have been friends ever since, playfully sparring on social media to fans’ delight.

In a joint interview with PEOPLE, the actors shared the “secret sauce” of their long-lasting friendship.

“I think the secret sauce to a long-lasting Hollywood friendship is not too dissimilar to having a partner or a marriage,” Reynolds told Jackman. “I am genuinely rooting for you, all the time. I want you to win. It’s the same way I feel about Blake. As I'm rooting for her, I know she's rooting for me, and it's why we're so connected.”

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26.
