Daredevil: Born Again EPs Tease Muse Arc and Its ‘Shocking Consequences’ — for Season 1 ‘and Beyond’

The Artist Known as Muse is here to wreak some bloody havoc.

Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again has at least twice given viewers a glimpse of this masked character — first at the close of Episode 1, when we saw him completing a mural of Kingpin-turned-mayor Wilson Fisk. More recently, Episode 4 ended with Muse lugging a man into a gruesome lair of sorts, to extract an unhealthy amount of blood from a femoral artery.

A villain pulled from the pages of Marvel comics, Muse is a psychopath who has been “kidnapping and murdering people, draining their blood and making murals all over New York City,” says David Boyd, director of Born Again Episodes 4 and 5.

But how will this highly unconventional artist’s handiwork figure into the Marvel Television drama’s bigger picture?

Speaking with TVLine, Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane first made clear that Muse will play a role in Season 1 “and beyond.”

“I call Muse a stressor in this story,” Scardapane elaborated, “in that in the battle between Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) and Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Muse causes a ripple effect.”

“He is an important stressor for the conflict of Fisk and Matt Murdock,” echoes executive producer Sana Amanat.

“He causes trouble for Fisk,” adds Scardapane. “He causes trouble for Matt Murdock.”

(As you can see, the EPs concede that Muse is male, though neither would confirm the casting of the role. But a skimming of Episode 4’s end credits, coupled with abundant online speculation, will point you to an actor whose face has already been seen on the series.)

Form the sound of it, the trouble that Muse will cause is with a capital T, scrawled in gloppy blood.

“The Muse run, for lack of a better word, in this story has pretty shocking consequences. And those consequences don’t end,” Scardapane warns. “We’re carrying them into Season 2, is the best way I can put it.”

Along the way, viewers will get a better look at Muse’s aforementioned lair, which became quite an attraction even for those who worked on the series.

“I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say,” director Aaron Moorhead hedged, “but it feels extraordinarily, um…. you very quickly forget that you’re on a set. And you start very much feeling like you’re in a lair.

“There are a lot of little details that are really exciting,” Moorhead effused, “and the directors of those episodes (including Boyd and Jeffrey Nachmanoff) made sure to capture those details, giving you a true sense of who someone is by their space.”
