Daphne Zuniga Says the More 'Over the Top' “Melrose Place ”Storylines Were, the More Fans 'Loved' It
"I couldn't keep up with where the baby went," she said of the third season's kidnapping arc
Daphne Zuniga is clued into what the Melrose Place fandom likes.
While co-hosting the Still the Place rewatch podcast, the actress (who played Jo on the beloved 90s drama) spoke about some of the show's more far-fetched storylines. Known for its schemes and complicated relationship dynamics, some plot points were even a lot for the cast to digest.
Zuniga referenced her character's bombastic storyline in the third season involving Jo's baby getting kidnapped, she recalled it being a high point for the series despite the somewhat confusing plot.
"We enjoy the drama, but this is when the world loved the show — when it was so over the top. They loved it," she said.
Fellow co-host Laura Leighton, who played Sydney on the Beverly Hills, 90210 spinoff, agreed.
"A lot of the times, I would ask myself, 'Oh my gosh, really? Is this ... I mean, isn't this over the top?'" she said. "Then somehow it managed to be exactly what the audience wanted.
On the podcast, Zuniga was responding to a fan's question about "the storyline your character was involved in that your first thought was 'wow, this is over the top, even for Melrose.'"
The actress quickly cited the third season's baby kidnapping arc. Reed Carter (James Wilder), the baby's father, died by the time the child was born. So at first, Reed's parents tried to get the baby away from Jo — and Kimberly, played by Marcia Cross, was supposed to fake the child's death in response, but kidnaps the infant instead.
Then, a nanny hired by Reed's parents kidnaps the child away from Kimberly, and with the persistent drama — and getting shot — Zuniga's character just gives the child up for adoption.

"I couldn't keep up with where the baby went," she admitted. "It was kidnapped. Then I got him back. Then he was stolen again. Then finally I gave him up in the end. It's like, that was over the top, you know?"

In September 2024, the Melrose Place cast had a reunion at 90s Con Florida, where they teased a return of the TV favorite.
Zuniga shared that "everyone has agreed to do it," and they were in the process of sorting out the business and legal angles of the show. "The stars need to align, but we want it as much as the fans want it," Leighton added.
