Daniel Stern Says It’ll Be a ‘Mindblower’ When Grandkids Finally Recognize Him from “Home Alone” Movies (Exclusive)
“They’re going to see grandpa get pelted with a brick,” Stern, 67, tells PEOPLE
Daniel Stern is known around the world as half of the Wet Bandits from Home Alone — but at home he’s known simply as “grandpa.”
Stern, 67, spoke to PEOPLE about stepping away from Hollywood, becoming an artist and trying to accept his legacy as one of the most recognizable movie characters because of the 1990 holiday classic.
But, for now, his grandchildren have no idea he’s an actor.
“I've got six grandkids now and another one coming, and I'm like, ‘Okay, well, who are these people going to think I am?’ “ the father of three says.
“They know me as grandpa,” Stern adds. “At some point, they're going to see these movies, or their kids might see the movies — and that’s a mindblower — that they're going to see grandpa get pelted with a brick.”
The Diner actor, who lives on a ranch in California’s Central Valley, shares that he made the decision to step away from the spotlight years ago in order to live a “real” life and immerse himself in family.
“I coached all my kids' teams. I taught in their classes. I manned the playground in our community. I was awarded the President's award for ... the Call to Service Award for volunteerism. So I loved to give back to the community, and that became a huge part of my life.” he explains.
Nowadays, Stern spends his time managing a citrus farm and cattle ranch, as well as focusing on creative fulfillment through writing and sculpture.
“I'm an artist, and I hate ... to sound pretentious about it, but I need to be creative,” he says. “I need to make things all the time. So whether I'm making a movie, writing a screenplay, writing a book, making a sculpture, or even cleaning the horse stalls or making tangerine juice, I'm making something. I feel satisfied in that.”
The actor also ruminates on ranch life as well as updates on his sculptures on his personal Instagram and TikTok accounts.

Stern tells PEOPLE that he especially loves communicating through social media because it allows people to tell their story via their own voice.
“You can tell your story, and it feels good to tell it,” he says. “And sort of that's the final step of any artistic creation — is giving it to an audience. So it's a wonderful world, and I'm so tickled people have discovered some of my stuff through the TikTok thing there.”
