The Daily Show: John Oliver Returns to Usher in Trump’s Monarchy — Watch Jon Stewart’s Reaction
America as a democratic republic had a good run. But, as John Oliver pointed out in his triumphant return to The Daily Show Monday, it looks like a monarchy is on the orange-hued horizon.
Oliver appeared roughly 16 minutes into the Comedy Central show’s broadcast, which was hosted by Jon Stewart. “Are you here to offer America your wisdom and counsel?” Stewart asked. “Oh no, no, no, Jon,” Oliver replied, “I’m here to gloat.”

Oliver’s visit followed Stewart’s discussion of the Trump administration’s hinting that it might not abide by rulings of the federal judiciary, one of the branches of government designed to check abuses of power perpetrated by the executive branch.
“It looks like we’re becoming less like the Constitutional republic it’s been for 250 years and more like the monarchy that we all fought to escape from,” Stewart said just before Oliver showed up behind him, clapping sarcastically.
Oliver’s appearance was a reunion for the two comedians, who worked together on The Daily Show for years. Oliver joined the late-night series in 2006 as a correspondent, and he guest-hosted the show for eight weeks in 2013 while Stewart, then the full-time emcee, directed the film Rosewater.
A few months after his run as fill-in host, Oliver left The Daily Show to head up his own series, HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which is about to enter its 12th season.
