Cynthia Erivo Reveals If She'll Reprise 'Wicked' Role on Broadway (Exclusive)

Wicked star Cynthia Erivo revealed whether or not she would consider reprising her role as Elphaba on Broadway after the box office success of Jon M. Chu's film adaptation.

"I think that would be selfish. I've done the film and I've learned a lot from the film," she exclusively told Parade at the National Board of Review Gala in New York City on Tuesday, Jan. 7, adding that "it opens the door for newer faces" to "do [it] on stage."

While Erivo says she won't be taking her Elphaba to the stage, that doesn't mean she's not interested in seeing who fills her shoes when the time comes.

"I'll be going to see it on stage!" she added.

Erivo made her Broadway debut in 2015 in The Color Purple, where she reprised her role as Celie Harris opposite Jennifer Hudson as Shug Avey and Danielle Brooks as Sofia. (Erivo previously starred in the London production in 2013.)

The Wicked star's Broadway performance earned her a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical in 2016.

"I knew I wanted to be an actress [as a kid]," she told Elle of her career aspirations in November last year. "I knew I wanted to be a singer. I knew I wanted to be successful. Those are the things that were very clear to me."

She added, "It’s wonderful, not just because of the things that it comes with, but because I got to do it as me. To be at this point and to feel very much like myself, and to be also open to whatever growth may come, feels really wonderful."
