The Curious Case of Chris Pine's Hair Length, from a Buzz Cut to a Bob in One Year: See His Evolution
From bobs to beards to buzzcuts, the actor has had a wide variety of hair looks recently — and we're wondering what sorcery is at play
Chris Pine’s hair transformations will give you whiplash.
Over the past couple of years, the 43-year-old actor’s looks have run the gamut from clean-shaven and polished to long and scruffy — some of which have incited internet frenzy. This week, he debuted his longest — and blondest — hair yet at the premiere of Poolman in Los Angeles.
Pine first began experimenting with longer hair at the March 2022 premiere of his film All the Old Knives. On the red carpet, the star sported long hair and a bushy beard, a departure from his usual clean-shaven face and short hair.
"I guess it's like, equal parts laziness and equal parts something I may do in the future here," Pine told Entertainment Tonight of his new style. "If there's any excuse not to shave and have makeup put on, I, you know ..."
When the outlet asked if his shaggier look was for an upcoming role, he replied, “Maybe. It's mostly laziness."
At the Venice Film Festival in September 2022, Pine set the internet ablaze with a blonde bob. The longer style grazed his shoulders and showed off his salt-and-pepper roots. The star looked dapper in a brown suit jacket, cream-colored pants, a brown bow tie and brown loafers.
Pine’s long blonde hair wasn’t the only thing fans were buzzing about. The actor came under fire when, in a viral clip, it appeared that his Don’t Worry Darling costar Harry Styles spit on Pine as he took a seat next to him at the premiere. Pine later denied the claim via a statement from his rep.
"This is a ridiculous story — a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation,” said the rep.
"Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine," the statement continued. "There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist."
A month later, Pine changed up his hairstyle again with a dramatic short cut. He debuted the look at the October 2022 Children's Hospital Los Angeles Gala alongside his father Robert. The short, well-groomed style embraced his grays and Pine also grew a salt-and-pepper beard.
In a video for Esquire released in March 2023, the Star Trek actor shared the reason he decided to make the chop.

"I thought I was looking pretty, pretty fly, the hair was long, everything was happening, and my publicist said I looked like Rachel from Friends," Pine said.
"I couldn't unhear it," he added.
In the months since his dramatic buzz, Pine has been letting his locks grow yet again and has been spotted in various stages of grow-out, but shocked fans at the April 24 Los Angeles premiere of his film Poolman, where he arrived with long blonde hair that went past his shoulders. He also sported a shaggy gray beard.
Seeing as later that evening he appeared at the event with shorter hair, it seems likely that Pine was wearing a wig — perhaps an homage to his Poolman character, who sports a similar style.
