Crunchyroll to Release RPG ‘Lord of Nazarick’ Based on ‘Overlord’ Anime Franchise

Sony’s Crunchyroll is gearing up to launch a role-playing game based on the popular “Overlord” anime series and film franchise — which centers on a guy who gets trapped in a massively multiplayer online RPG.

Crunchyroll teamed with Tokyo-based mobile game publisher A Plus Japan for the global English-language release of “Lord of Nazarick,” a turn-based RPG based on “Overlord” to be released this fall for Android and iOS devices. The game will let “Overlord” fans “catch up or relive the anime currently streaming on Crunchyroll with a fresh perspective,” the company said. (Watch the trailer below.)

No specific release date was announced for the game but Crunchyroll said it will come out around the Nov. 8 theatrical premiere of “Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom” in the U.S. and Canada. The film is being distributed by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment in North America, EMEA and Latin America.

“Lord of Nazarick” promises exclusive perks for Crunchyroll subscribers, including in-game currency, a battle pass, and access to activations across Crunchyroll theatrical and ecommerce experiences. It’s the first game to fully implement Crunchyroll Login, a feature that gives players who log in as Crunchyroll Premium members special rewards.

“Overlord” is set in the 22nd century and follows “regular salaryman” Momonga, who after 12 years of playing his favorite MMORPG logs in for the last time only to find himself transported into its world playing it indefinitely. Through his adventures, his avatar ascends to the title of Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown. The “Overlord” anime series, which debuted in 2017, is based on the light novel series of the same name written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin.

The “Lord of Nazarick” game, from Chinese developer Perfect World, offers “all-new canon scenarios as you command every fight.” Players can recruit from more than 50 characters from the anime, including guardians and pleiades, to build a party with others and battle powerful foes. The game’s immersive world includes locations from the anime, including the Great Tomb of Nazarick, Carne Village and E-Rantel.

Starting Tuesday, fans can preregister for the game on Google Play and Apple’s App Store. Crunchyroll Games is publishing “Lord of Nazarick” in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand and Latin America. A Plus Japan will publish the game in most European countries and the Middle East.

Currently, all four seasons of “Overlord” are streaming on Crunchyroll along with “Overlord: The Undead King” and “Overlord: The Dark Hero,” a pair of films that serve as recaps for Season 1.

Last month, Sony announced that Crunchyroll topped 15 million monthly subscribers. Crunchyroll is a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Japan’s Aniplex, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan).
