Coronavirus: Melbourne hotel's bizarre 'stay home' sign baffles

A Melbourne hotel has left Twitter users baffled with its bizarre attempt to encourage locals to ‘stay home’ amid the state’s shocking coronavirus outbreak.

By switching on the lights in certain rooms, the Novotel in South Wharf has lit up the side of its building with the word ‘STAY’ and what appears to be a house, however, the message seems to have been lost in translation.

Andrew Lund, a Nine News reporter, shared a snap of the hotel’s makeshift sign on Twitter on Tuesday, praising it as ‘very clever’ — other users were less convinced.

One compared the ‘house’ — with its two front windows, a door and a pitched roof — to the steel helmet Russel Crowe wore in Gladiator.

“Stay Gladiator?” they joked.

Others thought it looked more suited to the Spartan warriors in 300 while one suggested it might be from the Viking era.

The Magneto character from the X-Men comics also came up as well as mask-wearing Brit rapper, Daniel Dumile, who transforms into his ‘supervillain’ alter ego MF DOOM when on-stage.

In contrast, one user saw something completely different in the hotel’s sign: a ghost from the ‘80s arcade game, Pac-Man.
