'Cobra Kai' Returns for a Sixth and Final Season in an Epic 3-Part Event

William Zabka, Ralph Macchio and Yuji Okumoto star in Cobra Kai season 6 on Netflix

The Karate Kid movie premiered 40 years ago—June 22, 1984 to be exact—and decades later a new generation is learning that fighting is the last answer to a problem.

In the original underdog trilogy, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), a mild-mannered janitor and gardener, saves Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) from bullies at his new school. Mr. Miyagi then begins to train Daniel karate under the guise of household chores. One of the most memorable tasks? "Wax on, wax off."

Fast-forward to 2024 and the Netflix series Cobra Kai is teaching the same inspirational message to a new generation. The current-day series follows Daniel and his high school nemesis, Johnny (William Zabka) as competitive parents teaching their kids karate.

Cobra Kai debuted on YouTube in 2018 and was saved from cancellation by Netflix. But all good things must come to an end. Season 6 will be the show's final season. Here's what we know about Cobra Kai Season 6.

What is Cobra Kai about?

Cobra Kai is a spinoff of the original ’80s Karate Kid movies. The series takes place in present day where our once teenaged characters are now adults. Are they older? Yes. Are they wiser? That's debatable. After the events of Karate Kid III, life moved on for Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, and while life has been kind to Daniel, it hasn’t been so to Johnny.

In the beginning of the series, an aging Johnny is depressed and angry at the world, working one dead-end job after another. He now lives in Reseda, having fallen from his wealthy trappings and away from his verbally abusive and estranged stepfather (played by the late Ed Asner in this series). After saving his teenage neighbor with the karate skills he learned in high school, he finds a renewed interest in the sport and opens up a new Cobra Kai dojo. In doing so, he catches the eye of his old nemesis, Daniel LaRusso, now a successful businessman who owns several car dealerships in the valley.

What is Cobra Kai based on?

Cobra Kai is an original series based on characters from the The Karate Kid trilogy of movies starring Ralph Macchio and the late Pat Morita. Cobra Kai's original home was on YouTube before it was saved from cancellation by Netflix.

Ralph Macchio (Daniel LaRusso)

The seemingly ageless Macchio, 62, first took on the role of Daniel LaRusso when he was 22—playing a 17-year-old. In the Netflix series on which he serves as an executive producer, Daniel has started his own dojo, Miyagi-Do, to counter the teachings of the Cobra Kai. He and his wife own and operate several car dealerships in the San Fernando Valley, though business has been steadily dwindling.

Fun fact: Macchio's real-life son is named Daniel, after his Karate Kid character.

William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence)

Johnny is a down and out jack-of-all-trades. He has struggled with every job he’s had. He’s no longer with Shannon Keene, the mother of his estranged son, Robby Keene. In an effort to get his life back on track, Johnny reopens the Cobra Kai Dojo.

The Karate Kid was Zabka’s first movie role. He later studied filmmaking and wrote and produced a short film called, Most, which was nominated for an Academy Award. Zabka also serves as an executive producer on the Netflix series.

Martin Kove (John Kreese)

Kreese is Johnny’s old sensei and a guy who’s as shady as they come. Giving him the benefit of the doubt and believing people can change, Johnny allows Kreese back into his life and his dojo. Unfortunately, Kreese is just as nasty now as he was 40 years ago. He forcefully takes back leadership of the dojo and teaches Johnny’s students that they should let nothing stand in the way of victory.

Kove has been acting since the early '70s but it’s The Karate Kid that put him on the map. He starred in the two follow-up movies—The Karate Kid II and The Karate Kid III and had later roles in Wyatt Earp and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His son, Jesse Kove, is also an actor. The two starred in the Hallmark Channel movie, A Taste of Love.

Peyton List (Tory Nichols)

Tory is a troubled teen who speaks her mind and juggles multiple jobs, school, her boyfriend and a sick parent. She is willing to fight anyone who angers her and is responsible for starting the school karate war.

List started her career as a child model. Both she and her twin brother, Spencer, as well as her younger brother, Phoenix, are all actors. List recently starred in B. Loved, a supernatural teen romance available to stream on Max. She is not to be confused with another actress also named Peyton List, who appeared in The CW's Tomorrow People, Hallmark Mystery's A Maple Valley Christmas, and the first season of Star Trek: Picard.

Yuji Okumoto (Chozen Toguchi)

Chozen was the villain of the story in The Karate Kid Part II. After meeting Daniel again decades later when Daniel revisits Mr. Miyagi's hometown in Japan, the two part ways as friends. Daniel later looks to Chozen to help him.
