Chris Hemsworth gives update on “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” crossover: 'Nothing official yet'

"I don’t know yet. I keep getting asked about that," the "Transformers One" star tells Entertainment Weekly.

If Chris Hemsworth is starring in the upcoming Transformers and G.I. Joe live-action crossover movie, it's news to him.

When the Marvel star stopped by Entertainment Weekly's Comic-Con 2024 video suite on Thursday to discuss voicing a young Optimus Prime in the animated Transformers One (in theaters Sept. 20), he gave an update on his involvement in the crossover after EW reported that he was in talks to star.

"I don’t know yet," Hemsworth admitted. "I keep getting asked about that. [Producer] Lorenzo [di Bonaventura] had brought it up when I was recording this film ... and we started talking about where the universe could expand and how fun it could be. And look, I’m just down for great filmmakers, great scripts, great stories. There’s a lot of potential in this universe, in both the G.I. Joe world and the Transformers world, to recreate, try something different."

Hemsworth said that he thinks it would be "really fun to give something to audiences that’s a new take and something fresh."

If Hemsworth does get cast in the crossover, he doesn't know what character he would play — or if he would maybe pull double duty. "I’m not even sure," he said about a potential role. "I was like, 'Am I going to be, like, talking to myself? Am I still going to play Optimus Prime and then switch over to G.I. Joe? Do I get paid twice? What’s happening here? That’s the important question."

The crossover was first teased at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts when G.I. Joe actor Michael Kelly (House of CardsTom Clancy's Jack Ryan) popped up as Agent Burke to recruit Anthony Ramos' Noah Diaz and "the big guys" (i.e. Autobots) to join the Joes' cause.

"We're introducing Joe characters into the world that we're dealing with, on whatever our characters are gonna go do," di Bonaventura previously told EW of the next planned film. "We're also not through with the Maximals, so I imagine in the next movie, we'll have Maximals, Autobots, and Joes."

Speaking with EW separately, Caple confirmed he's deep into developing the Rise of the Beasts sequel. "It is definitely gonna incorporate some Joes characters, but it won't go into, maybe, the true origins of the Joes."

Transformers One is an animated origin story that reveals that Optimus Prime and Megatron were actually brothers-in-arms who knew each other as Orion Pax and D-16, respectively, before they became bitter adversaries warring over the fate of their planet, Cybertron. Along with Hemsworth, the movie's voice cast includes Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett JohanssonKeegan-Michael KeyJon HammLaurence Fishburne, and Steve Buscemi.
