Celebrity Photographer Genevieve de Manio Shares Her Top Tips for Capturing Stunning Wedding Photos (Exclusive)

The acclaimed photographer, who shot former first daughter Chelsea Clinton's 2010 wedding, has a new book out titled SILVER: Moments into Memories

While weddings tend to unfold in the blink of an eye, the photos from the day last a lifetime. It's imperative to choose the right photographer and put careful time and planning into the images for your big day.

Here, celebrity photographer Genevieve "Gigi" de Manio — who has more than 25 years of experience and shot Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky's 2010 wedding — shares her expert tips for making sure you'll have an album of gorgeous photos to treasure for years to come. De Manio's new book: SILVER: Moments into Memories, a retrospective of her work, which showcases stunning photography of her clients weddings and events, is available now.

Choose the Right Time of Day

While it's not always easy to perfectly time a photo session, especially when larger groups of people are involved, de Manio says there's a particular moment of the day when the photography magic happens.

"Natural light significantly enhances photographs, so aim for the 'golden hour' — just before sunset — to capture a warm and flattering glow," she explains. "If you need to take your photos in the middle of the day, try and stay away from the direct sun — too harsh — and instead choose a shaded area to capture a soft and even light."

Seek Out Backgrounds That Tell a Story

To capture memorable wedding photos, it's all about getting creative. De Manio suggests taking time to explore your venue and surroundings for special spots to pose in.

"Look for picturesque landscapes, charming architecture (no gazebos!) or the intimacy of a garden," the photographer says. "Each setting can evoke a different mood to tell a story of love and romance."

Don't Forget the Candid Moments

Although posed photos can capture the people and milestones at a wedding — while offering greater control over lighting, location and the like — it's the candid shots that catch all the unexpected and emotional moments. Therefore, it's ideal to have a good balance of both.

"Candid moments communicate authentic emotion and are a high priority for me and my clients," de Manio says. "Laughter, tears, a warm embrace and intimate glances speak volumes. Those unscripted interactions often reveal the essence of the wedding day, capturing the joy and connection between you and your loved ones in a way that posed shots simply cannot."

Don’t Underestimate the Importance of Décor and Setting Details

While it's essential to capture the people at a wedding, couples will also appreciate having images of all the special details and touches that made their event uniquely theirs.

"Every design element — from the flowers and table settings to the stationery — reflects the thought and care you put into crafting your own wedding experience. These elements not only enhance the beauty of the setting, but also add depth to the day’s story, often carrying significant meaning that enriches the overall wedding narrative," de Manio tells PEOPLE.

Take the Time to Connect with Your Photographer Before the Wedding

De Manio advises that couples spend time developing a rapport with their photographer ahead of the big day, and clearly communicate their goals and wishes for their wedding images.

"The more they know about you and your story as a couple, the better able they are to pick up on details and moments of meaningful connection that you will treasure forever in your photographs," de Manio explains.

"Be sure to communicate with your photographer about any must-have moments that need to be captured, including pictures with specific friends or family members," she continues. "Think about this list ahead of time so you don’t need to stress and worry on your wedding day about getting every important combination."
