Cate Blanchett Embraces Gilded Glamour in Embellished Gold Armani Gown at San Sebastian Film Festival 2024

Emotions were running high for Cate Blanchett on Saturday in Spain while tearfully accepting the Donostia Award during the 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival.

“Morag Ross, the wonderful makeup artist who did all the makeup for Pedro’s film, has put a lot of mascara on me which is now running down my face,” she said during her acceptance speech to a few chuckles. “Anyway.”

For the event, Blanchett wore a gold gilded dress by Giorgio Armani featuring heavy embellishments. Styled by Blanchett’s longtime collaborator Elizabeth Stewart, the dress features a high neck and long sleeves. It is composed of a sheer top layer featuring gold embroidery and is accentuated throughout with pearls of varying sizes. The embroidery mostly includes florals and various leaf designs.

With the ornate gown, Blanchett chose a pointed-toe gold shoe.

The Donostia Award is the highest honor given at the San Sebastian Film Festival. It was created in 1986 and recognizes outstanding contributions to the world of film. Others honored include Lauren Bacall, Al Pacino, Jessica Lange, Glenn Close, Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz and more. In addition to Blanchett being honored this year, so was Pedro Almodovar.

Blanchett has had a long and fruitful relationship with Armani. In 2018, she was named the company’s first global beauty ambassador, a role she still occupies. Prior to that, she had been the face of the Si fragrance franchise in a contract that launched in 2013.

Though the look that she wore to accept the Donostia Award was custom, Blanchett has made it a point to wear and re-wear looks for various events to underscore conversations about sustainability. While at the San Sebastian Film Festival, she did this with a denim suit from Armani that she wore earlier in the day. She had previously worn the same suit with its brown leather piping in June 2023, according to Stewart.

While at the Venice Film Festival this year, she also re-wore a black velvet Armani look featuring puffed up shoulders. She had previously worn it in 2023.
