Camilla breaks silence on The Crown as she meets the actress who plays her

After fans have spent years wondering what the royal family really think about their life being dramatised on The Crown, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has finally spoken out about the popular Netflix series.

The Duchess opened up about her on-screen portrayal after meeting actress Emerald Fennell, who played her for two seasons on the show, at Clarence House on Tuesday to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The pair appeared to get along as they were photographed smiling while having a private conversation, before Camilla made reference to The Crown in her speech to the women in attendance.

“It is reassuring to know that, if I should fall off my perch at any moment, my fictional alter ego is here to take over,” she joked.

“So, Emerald, be prepared!”

Speaking with reporters after the event, Emerald described the encounter as “absolutely delightful” and admitted that she had fears over how it was going to go.

“I was nervous I might be thrown in the tower but so far so good. She’s been in the spotlight for a long time and has always weathered it with a lot of grace and good humour,” she said.

While she went on to praise Camilla’s work for women’s causes and charities over the years, the Promising Young Woman director refused to reveal exactly what they spoke about.

“You know what, I'm going to be very discreet – because if I've learnt anything it's ‘loose lips sink ships’,” she added.

Emerald portrayed Camilla in seasons three and four of The Crown, which followed her romance with Prince Charles in the early ‘70s and subsequent love triangle with Princess Diana.

While the show has been presented as a dramatisation of the lives of the British royal family, Charles and Camilla faced immense backlash after the latest season detailed the pair’s affair when they were both married.

Diana fans took to the Clarence House Instagram account at the time and left several comments referencing the late Princess of Wales, with the most popular comment reading “Diana forever”.

Royal insiders have also slammed the show for having “no regard to the actual people involved who are having their lives hijacked and exploited”.

“In this case, it's dragging up things that happened during very difficult times 25 or 30 years ago without a thought for anyone's feelings. That isn't right or fair, particularly when so many of the things being depicted don't represent the truth” a palace source told the Mail on Sunday.

“This is trolling with a Hollywood budget.”
