Camila Cabello is officially over her blonde bombshell era. The singer was the epitome of gothic glam as she returned to the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, September 11. The anticipation around her appearance was already at a high, thanks to the network’s decision to add Cabello’s ex-boyfriend Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter to the performance roster amid the release of “Short n’ Sweet,” which fans think references a love triangle between the three.

Cabello, who is nominated for the Best Pop category, made sure all eyes were on her as she channeled Wednesday Addams at the 2024 MTV VMAs in a gothic wedding-inspired outfit, including a sheer black veil and a lace dress that looked like it was embroidered with cobwebs.

Cabello's signature brunette locks were back as she posed on the red carpet ahead of her performance. She wore a black semi-sheer Tony Ward Fall-Winter 2024 Couture gown, which featured an asymmetric neckline, and a dramatic black lace and nude mesh overlay. As she moved, the dress subtly sparkled with rhinestones that appeared to have been stitched into the intricate web-like design.

Sheer embroidered sleeves that covered her fingers and a sheer black mesh veil that almost reached her knees added some major drama—and nuptial vibes—to her VMAs look. Cabello leaned into the goth aesthetic for her accessories and beauty look, covering her throat with a black leather choker and cross necklace combo, and wearing a nude pout paired with a sultry smoky eye.

Cabello last performed at the VMAs in 2021, two years after she and Mendes heated up the stage with a spicy rendition of their duet “Señorita.” Mendes, who was still with the former Fifth Harmony star at the time, also performed shortly after Cabello sang "Don't Go Yet." While she wore a flamenco-inspired hot pink-and-black asymmetrical ruffled dress on stage (a very different look than her 2024 VMAs gown), the “He Knows” singer put a colorful twist on the coquette style trend on the red carpet in a dual-toned dress that featured Barbie pink and red shades, a giant bow in the front, and a chiffon skirt. Her then-dark brunette locks were styled in a sleek, middle-parted low bun, and she matched her hot pink eyeshadow and blush to the silk bustier of her architectural gown.
