Cameron Champ holds on to win Safeway Open, marking second career title

While he saw his lead dwindle in the closing holes, Cameron Champ held on to pick up his first win of the PGA Tour season on Sunday.

Champ, who mounted a massive lead after an impressive third round on Saturday, made birdie on the final hole to grab a one-shot win Sunday at the Safeway Open in Napa, California — marking his second victory on Tour.

Champ, who fired a 5-under 67 on Saturday to grab a three-shot lead, came out hot on Sunday.

He carded three birdies through his first six holes to stay in front of the rest of the field — including an impressive birdie save on No. 5 after landing on a steep slope.

Champ had a near-perfect back nine, too, making seven straight pars. A bogey on No. 17, combined with a birdie from Adam Hadwin, cut his lead to just one, however — putting his win in jeopardy.

Yet after a bomb drive on No. 18, and a clutch chip right next to the hole, Champ made birdie to pick up the win.

Hadwin came up just shy in second place at 16-under for the week behind three straight birdies to close out his round. Marc Leishman, who skyrocketed up 20 spots on the leaderboard, finished in third thanks to a 7-under 65 on Sunday. Charles Howell III and Zac Blair were just one back at 13-under.

Champ made his official debut on the PGA Tour last season, where he quickly picked up a win at the Sanderson Farms Championship. While The 24-year-old missed the cut 11 times — including a rough stretch where he missed it eight times in 11 tournaments — Champ qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs and reached the BMW Championship.

Sunday’s win marked Champ’s second outing of the year, following a T28 finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship last week.
