'When Calls the Heart' Star's Mother Says Five-Story Fall Was Not 'Intentional'

Mamie Laverock

Mamie Laverock, who plays Rosaleen Sullivan on When Calls the Heart, "opened her eyes" for the first time since falling five stories from a hospital balcony over Memorial Day weekend, her mother, Nicole Rockmann, confirmed to the Los Angeles Times.

"Let's just hope this is the turnaround and she's going to get through this now," Rockmann told the outlet. "I couldn't be happier that people reached out and cared. The story will be told."

So far, the story has been shrouded in mystery. Laverock, 19, had been hospitalized at St. Paul's hospital in Vancouver since May 11 for an undisclosed medical emergency when the fall happened. Specifically, she was being escorted from a secure unit at the hospital to a balcony walkway when the accident, which required her to undergo several multi-hour surgeries, took place.

“This is an absolute miracle and there will be accountability,” Rockmann told the Times, adding that her family plans to take legal action against the hospital.

"We have a case. All we care about is that Mamie can make a recovery and that she’s alive and that she’s fighting and that she’s strong. It's unbelievable that she’s with us." (A spokesperson for Providence Health Care, which operates St. Paul’s Hospital, confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that “an incident happened” but declined to comment on the particulars due to patient privacy, the outlet stated.)

In the latest update to the family's GoFundMe page, Rockmann further elaborated on Mamie's condition, saying her "body has been shattered."

"...She is enduring tremendous pain and continues to not give up," she added. "We can only hold onto the miracles of each day and continue to thank everyone for their prayers and marvel at the miracles of her story. Our daughter loves her life and loves her family and is fighting hard everyday."

The network also posted their support for Laverock's recovery on their Instagram page and donated to the family's GoFundMe page.

Erin Krakow, star and executive producer of When Calls the Heart and actress Johannah Newmarch, who played Laverock's mother on the show, posted to their Instagram accounts as well. "💔 I just donated. If you have the means to do so, I hope you will too," Krakow wrote.

"I love this wonderful family so much, and my heart is broken," Newmarch shared. "Such a devastating time for them and all who care deeply for sweet Mamie."

Laverock appeared in the first two seasons of When Calls the Heart when she was just 9 years old and returned for a short guest starring role in Season 10.

Aside from When Calls the Heart, Laverock has appeared in the film This Means War, and in the television series Psych and A Series of Unfortunate Events.
