Bunnings rug upcycle adds flair to TikToker's living room

We love a Bunnings hack as much as the next person, especially when it gives us a unique piece for our home at a bargain price.

Let's face it, when you're looking for bargain homewares it can sometimes be frustrating having the same thing as everyone else.

However, there are creative types on TikTok showing just how easy it is to personalise homewares for your own look.

Geneva Vanderzeil found a hack on Twitter that used duct tape to create a patterned rug.

A self-confessed DIYer, Geneva is always up for testing out new hacks.

"I’m all about DIYing and upcycling in the home, and creating spaces that are unique to you," she says on her website.

"I have a passion for creating a home that’s not only beautiful, but also cosy and welcoming, and decorating it with DIYs that make my heart sing."

How she did it

After finding $50 shag rugs at Bunnings, Geneva combined two to create a whole new patterned rug and shared her results and process on TikTok.

And the video has been watched over half a million times!

"These shag rugs are great, because they are non-woven and don't completely unravel when you cut into them," she explains in the video.

Geneva cut off the edge of each rug before marking them in 20cm by 20cm squares.

She then cut the squares out of both rugs.

She lined up the squares in alternating colours, fixing them together with duct tape, before gluing a non-slip rug pad to the underside.

And the internet rugged up ...

Okay!!!!! I actually love this 😅 adding to my DIY list," one follower wrote.

"This turned out so much cooler than I was expecting," another added.

"So fun! I love how you just tackle it!" a third added.

Some even offered their own handy hints.

"Cut the squares with an Exacto knife. Almost no shedding," one person commented.

"This is major," Geneva replied.

Just a day later, Geneva was sharing a different pattern to try, using an abstract design and captioning the video with: "Can’t stop making these rugs!"

Given the results, we're sure we'll be seeing many more of these on the socials!
