Budget $15 BWS, Dan Murphy's wine named World's Best

Aussies will be eager to sip on something fresh today as a sweltering heatwave sweeps the nation, and it looks like for the price of just $15 they can do just that with a bottle of the world’s best white wine.

That’s right, an Aussie white has wowed wine lovers by scooping up the Best in Class in Rieslings at the San Francisco International Wine Competition this week and it’s on sale for less than a crisp $20 note.

It was Barossa’s Cat Amongst The Pigeons Eden Valley Riesling that took home the prize – the drop from South Australia a famously superior wine for its very reasonable $22 price tag, or $15 as it’s currently on sale for at Dan Murphy’s!

The South Australian wines have picked up a jaw-dropping 83 prizes this year alone

“To receive recognition on the international stage and at such a prestigious show is a great reward for the entire team,” winemaker Richard Quodling said in a statement after the win.

“It was particularly satisfying to see two of our Riesling wines win in San Francisco. Australian winemakers have created a very distinctive style of Riesling, beautifully steely and aromatic.”

The resiling wasn’t the only winner for the Cat Amongst the Pigeons either, in total they took home 7 medals including a Gold for another resiling, the Cat Amongst The Pigeons Fat Cat Eden Valley Riesling and for the Cat Amongst The Pigeons Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon which retail for $29 and $21 respectively.

The delicious drop can be picked up only at BWS and Dan Murphy’s around the country.

It comes as more and more budget Aussie wines are recognised in winemaking circles as superior drops.

Last month an $18 Aldi wine took out one of the most prestigious prizes at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show this year, nosing out competitors more than five times its price for the honour.

ALDI’s Blackstone Paddock Cabernet Sauvignon from the Margaret River was this year’s lucky winner of the wine show’s renowned Max Schubert AM Trophy for Most Outstanding Red Wine in Show.

Looks like those looking to keep thing a little fancier this year won’t have to break the bank to do so!
