The Pretty Baby star, now 59, went into detail about the situation while sitting down for an interview with Us Weekly, recalling to the publication that when she was in her 40s, her "wonderful" gynecologist asked if the length of her labia had ever caused discomfort.

Shields had actually experienced bleeding, chafing and discomfort since high school, so after being told that a surgical reduction was possible, she agreed to go through with the procedure as recommended by her gynecologist.

But it was during a post-op checkup that her Beverly Hills plastic surgeon made a shocking revelation.

"He informed me that he threw in a little bonus," she explained, noting that in addition to her reduction, the surgeon—without her consent—also performed a rejuvenation (or vaginal tightening).

"It felt like such an invasion—such a bizarre, like, rape of some kind," Shields expressed.

She remembered the plastic surgeon "legitimately proudly explained to me that he, you know, threw in a little twofer."

“Nothing pointed toward this need to be tighter or smaller or firmer or younger, especially there,” said Shields, who recalled that both she and her gynecologist were furious over the situation.

As a result of the "shame" and "anger" she was left feeling, Shields didn't open up about the experience—not even to her husband, Chris Henchy, "for the longest time."

While discussing the topic in her book, Shields writes, "I’d be lying if I said I’m not embarrassed to share this very intimate information," Us Weekly reports. "But, if we are to change the way we approach and talk about women’s health, then we need to bring up the uncomfortable but very real issues. Shame is no longer an option."
