Backlash online as 'homophobic' parents confront gay daughter

Bride and Prejudice has turned the drama up to maximum all season, but one storyline is hitting people harder than the others.

The battle between daughter JoJo, who is openly gay, and her traditional parents Sid and Lody has raged for years and came to a head when JoJo announced her intention to marry girlfriend Jess.

The strict Lebanese Catholics have stayed firm that attending their daughter’s nuptials would be a sin against God and the church, a position backed up by their church’s notoriously anti-homosexual marriage stance.

After watching the drama play out on the reality show over the past month, fans have finally erupted online, calling out the elderly couple for ‘homophobic’ and ‘cruel’ treatment of their daughter.

It all reached boiling point when JoJo sat down with her parents for one last attempt at winning them over.

‘Ashamed and embarrassed’

The formerly cool, calm and collected daughter decided to get tough with her parents, even turning some of their own phrases against them.

“I’m actually embarrassed and ashamed that you are my parents right now,” she said, harking back to Sid saying he was ‘ashamed and embarrassed’ to have a gay daughter.

Last episode, Sid also said his religion would rather ‘slit his throat’ than see him sin, which would include attending his daughter’s wedding.

JoJo challenged the pair’s ‘tough guy’ approach, instead accusing them of being weak.

“Youse don’t have enough courage, and enough guts or enough balls to stand up for your child, and you’re going to let people run us down,” she said, pointing out they were happy to attend weddings of people who had sex before marriage, something the church also teaches against.

She then asked why they had children if they would be so quick to disown her.

“I didn’t know I was going to have one not normal,” was Lody’s shocking response.

Fans outraged

Fans have finally had enough of the vitriolic dialogue and taken to Twitter to respond to speak out.

“It is NOT ok to tell your homosexual child that you are embarrassed or ashamed of them. You parents should be ashamed and embarrassed,” one person tweeted.

“Support your daughter, unconditional love!” another wrote.

Others argued that JoJo wasn’t being fair to her parents, who grew up in a different time.

“I’m torn. He is very religious and being gay is a sin in his Bible,” one woman wrote.

Others responded ‘yes’ to a post from the show’s official page, asking if JoJo is being unfair on her dad.

Most voices on Twitter did side with JoJo, however.

As for JoJo, it seems she may finally have had enough.

‘It’s embarrassing and it’s disgusting,” she said.
