Blake Lively Wears Ryan Reynolds' Shirts and Socks in “It Ends With Us”, Plus Gigi Hadid's Sweaters (Exclusive)

The actress tells PEOPLE she pulled a lot of from her own wardrobe to wear in the hotly anticipated film

Blake Lively tapped into her own wardrobe for her It Ends With Us costumes — plus the closets of her friends and family.

The star plays Lily Bloom in the romantic drama, sporting countless colorful outfits throughout the film. In an interview beside her costar Jenny Slate for this week's issue, Lively tells PEOPLE where some of the pieces came from.

"There's a lot of my stuff," she says. "The boots were mine [in the birthday party scene]. There are these great Louboutins that are also a close-up on them when we're dancing in the bar. Those are mine."

"I have a few of my husband's shirts and socks randomly in the movie," adds Lively, who married Ryan Reynolds in 2012.

Plus, "I have some of Gigi Hadid's sweaters in the movie. She has this line, Guest In Residence, but also she would run out and I would be like, 'I want this one' because of all the really cool patterns and whatnot, and she’d be like, 'I have that. You can wear mine.' So some of that."

Slate, who plays Lily's best friend Allysa in the movie, praises Lively's style and attention to detail.

"She has such a fine aesthetic attunement, and you can see it everywhere," she says. "You can see it not just in the way that so many of her costumes have these handmade touches and that she brought them from home. She throws herself into everything — even when there's a montage where you see Lily showing Allysa how to do an arrangement, Blake was actually doing that stuff."

Continues Slate, "She really weaves what pleases her in her own life and expands it into her work. It was just so nice to be around that. So many people show up and they don't even really register where they're standing on set. Instead, she basically brought the whole set and put it together!"

Costume designer Eric Daman tells PEOPLE in a separate interview about dipping into Lively's wardrobe for the fashion in the movie.

"I got to go to Blake Lively’s shoe closet. I can’t even tell you how amazing," says Daman.

The designer adds of landing on the boots for the jaw-dropping moment, featured in one of the trailers, "She brought them in, and what am I going to do? Be like, 'I don’t know, those feel like middle management. No, that’s not the thing.' The producers and other people had different ideas. 'What do you mean she’s wearing crystal boots? Who is it?' I’m like, 'Because she’s wearing f---ing crystal YSL boots and you’re going to do a pan of her walking in.' "

Daman says the shiny boot moment paired with the coat drop in that scene is "fierce AF."

It Ends With Us, the big screen adapation of Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel, is in theaters Aug. 9.
