Bette Milder blasted for 'racist' Melania Trump tweet
US star Bette Midler has been slammed on social media and labelled “racist” after another online attack on First Lady Melania Trump.
The 74-year-old entertainer, who is an outspoken critic of Donald Trump, took aim at her accent in a post on Monday, having already previously called Melania an “illegal alien”.
The tweet includes a photo of Melania on the phone with a Christmas tree in the background. The words “DO I STILL HAV TO DU DIS FU***** CHRISTMAS DING?” are in a speech bubble on the photo, mocking her Slovenian accent.
Melania is only the second First Lady in history to be born outside of the US and is the only First Lady to become a US citizen after marrying.
The post prompted plenty of angry reactions from her followers on Twitter.
“Are you seriously slating someone for their accent????” one person asked.
“She speaks 6 languages fluently, she is intelligent and has been given a raw deal by most people and all of the media. She does not deserve that or your rhetoric,” another added.
While a third wrote: “I don't like her, either, but ridiculing accents isn't cool, ma'am.”
Bette first took aim at Melania during the second night of the Republican National Convention back in August.
While live tweeting the First Lady’s speech, she called Melania an “illegal alien” who “can’t speak English” (amongst other jabs).
The Hocus Pocus star was slammed as “xenophobic”, facing criticism from both sides of politics for her remarks. Piers Morgan at the time tweeted: “Oh God, Bette Midler’s a racist”.
“Who knew xenophobia was the wind beneath your wings,” Fox host Lisa ‘Kennedy’ Montgomery said.
Though Bette initially doubled down on the tweets writing: “Just giving them a taste of their own immigrant bashing medicine”, the First Wives Club star eventually apologised.
“I was wrong to make fun of her accent. America is made up people who speak with all kinds of accents, and they are all welcomed always,” she tweeted.
