We tasted 43 of the best nonalcoholic drinks, and the beers beat the mocktails by a mile

Beat the Dry January doldrums! We're spilling on which zero-proof cans could actually pass for the real thing.

Congrats to anyone participating in Dry January: You've made it to the halfway mark! If your beverage options are starting to feel a bit stale, let us help. The zero-proof beer and cocktail market is booming — and while that's a good thing, especially now that the surgeon general has called for cancer warnings on alcohol — it means you could spend months sipping just to figure out the best nonalcoholic drinks.

To get to the bottom of it, we gathered a group of Yahoo staffers that included teetotalers, sober-curious folks and avid drinkers for a blind taste test. We sampled 43 top-rated nonalcoholic beers and canned cocktails (aka mocktails), and I have to be honest with you: The results of our totally scientific study (okay, it wasn't that strict, but we did take our job seriously!) surprised us.

We discovered that if you want a product that actually tastes like the real thing, zero-proof beer is the way to go. Few mocktails could re-create the experience of a good mixed drink, and some tasted downright strange. That said, a couple bubbled to the top of our list of best nonalcoholic drinks, so we're including them below, along with our favorite NA beers (of which there were many)! To top things off, we're also sharing editor-approved beer glasses and can coolers — because every good drink deserves to be served in style. Cheers!

(Pssst we'll continue testing more of the best nonalcoholic drinks this year and will update this story regularly with our findings. Coming soon: St. Agrestis Phony Negroni, several NA canned cocktails from AF Drinks and 8ZERO5 Blonde Ale.)

Avid beer drinkers were especially impressed with this well-rounded IPA, which is brewed with a mix of barley, wheat and oat malts. It scored the highest of any drink we tested on flavor and overall enjoyment, receiving 14.4 points out of 20. In fact, at the end of our blind tasting, everyone wanted to know which brand made this brew, and several testers took photos of the can so they could buy it themselves.

"Hoppy like a real beer," wrote one tester. "Like a session IPA without the side effects," commented another.

Pros
  • Great aroma
  • Hoppy, pleasant taste
Cons
  • Too light-tasting for some

Our winners weren't all newfangled craft brews. It took years to develop the recipe for Heineken's entry into the zero-proof world, and the result earned top marks among our testers for how close it tasted to its alcoholic counterpart. "No notes. Great," wrote one fan.

Pros
  • From a heritage brand
  • Affordable ($2.75 per can)
  • Exceptional taste
Cons
  • May taste too light for some

Though Good Time Brewing Co.'s classic IPA took top honors, this flavorful IPA came in a close second, thanks to its tropical notes and near-perfect level of carbonation. "Good taste, goes down well. Actually tasted okay at room temperature," mentioned one tester. Others pointed out its sweetness: "Fruity, in a good way," wrote a staffer.

(FYI the Run Wild IPA from Athletic Brewing, which is one of the biggest names in NA beers, was also a favorite, with a score just 0.2 points lower than Untitled Art!)

Pros
  • Low calorie (55 calories per can)
  • Fruity flavor and aroma
Cons
  • Might be too sweet for some

Let's say you don't typically enjoy beer, but want to crack one open at a party. Give this dark, nutty stout a try, say some of our testers. It was a favorite among self-proclaimed non-beer drinkers, possibly because it doesn't taste much like a typical brew. "Chocolatey. Pleasant sip — great flavor from start to finish," wrote one fan.

Pros
  • Smells like chocolate
  • Rich taste with some bitterness
Cons
  • Beer connoisseurs didn't love this one

The highest scorer of any canned cocktail we tested with 13.5 out of 20 points, this tasty concoction won us over with its bold flavor and pleasant sweetness. Several commenters thought it tasted like a fruity tea. "I get hints of hibiscus. Love!" read one comment. "Definitely tastes like a fruity alcoholic drink!" praised another tester.

In addition to pomegranate, cranberry, ginger spice and rosemary, this drink is made with adaptogens including L-theanine and lion's mane, which are meant to naturally relax you.

Pros
  • Made with adaptogens
  • Tastes like an actual cocktail
  • Looks like a classic spritz, with a rich pinky red color
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Some thought the flavor was a bit syrupy

Though you probably won't mistake this for a rum-spiked cocktail, ISH's drink won over many testers with its light, zesty flavor. "Like lemon-lime soda. Easiest to drink," wrote one tester.

Another detected notes of spearmint tea and ginger. Interestingly, it is made with mint along with lime and lemon, but no ginger. The spicy notes probably come from the nutmeg and capsicum extract in the ingredients list.

Pros
  • Light and easy-to-drink
  • Soda-esque flavor (this might be a con for some)
  • 2023 Bartenders Spirits Awards recipient
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Some thought the flavor skewed a bit artificial

"Good balance of sweet and bitter," noted one tester of this crisp spritz made with lime juice, yuzu juice, lemon balm extract and elderflower extract. Though few testers thought it tasted like a true cocktail replacement, it rated third-highest for overall enjoyment after the two mocktails above.

Pros
  • Easy to drink
  • Not as carbonated as others (might be a con for some)
  • No added sugar
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Some thought it tasted a bit bland

We gathered a total of 18 Yahoo staffers, all with different drinking preferences, for two blind taste tests. Many folks said they were participating in Dry January, but others were simply curious about the best nonalcoholic drinks on the market. We tasted beer and cocktails separately and poured each drink into a cup labeled only with a letter to keep the test blind.

Then came the fun part! Each tester sipped to their heart's content and filled out a rubric rating each drink from a scale of one to five on flavor, carbonation, accuracy (was it a satisfying beer or cocktail replacement?) and overall enjoyment. We also asked the testers to jot down any thoughts they had about the samples.

A modern take on the classic tulip beer glass, this pick is designed to enhance the aroma and flavor of your favorite brew. Though you should hand-wash it to prolong its life, in a pinch you can put it in the dishwasher; it's also freezer safe for chilling.
