While it’s lovely to set up your picnic rug and enjoy our spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks under the stars, the crowds, the noise, the chances of getting rained on (which, in a La Niña year are not to be underestimated) and the practicalities of getting back home all make a room with a view a more desirable option.
Granted, it does come with a higher price tag, but that’s what you pay for a little bit of luxury.
Here, we’ve rounded up some of the best hotel stays in Sydney and Melbourne with a front row view of the fireworks displays.
Sydney Hotels you can still book
Four Seasons Sydney
This five-star hotel at The Rocks has rooms with sweeping views over the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay.
Guests are given two visitor passes per room to invite an additional two people up to watch the fireworks, however only the guests with a reservation will be able to stay overnight.
There are still some rooms with partial harbour views available for this year, with rooms with a partial view starting at $1,170 on New Year’s Eve.
View Sydney
You don’t have to stay in the CBD to get spectacular views of the bridge. The View hotel in North Sydney still has rooms with unobstructed views of the harbour starting at $1,760 a night.
For New Year’s Eve, its king suites come with an in-room dining valet service and a four-hour beverage package so you won’t miss a moment of that spectacular view.
The hotel is also hosting an open air soiree party on New Year’s Eve and taking bookings for a five-course degustation dinner overlooking the fireworks.

It has a two-night minimum stay over New Year’s with rooms starting at $2,098 for two nights.
Other places to stay to be close to the NYE action in Sydney
If a room with a view isn’t an option this year but you still want to stay the night in the city to attend New Year’s Eve festivities, then these hotels are for you.
Adina Apartment Hotel Sydney
Situated near Town Hall station, the rooms at the Adina Apartment Hotel are spacious and include a kitchenette.
There’s also a heated indoor swimming pool and sauna to relax in the next day. There’s a minimum two-night stay over New Year’s with prices starting at $1,177 for both nights.
Rendezvous Hotel Sydney
A short walk from Circular Quay is the boutique, 61-room Rendezvous Hotel.
It’s made up of historic terrace houses in The Rocks, has buckets of charm and some rooms have a view, although these tend to book up fast.

Shangri-La Sydney
For an uninterrupted view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, it’s hard to look past the Sydney Harbour rooms at the Shangri-La Sydney.
Plus, when you wake up the next morning you’ll have access to the hotel’s day spa, indoor pool and fitness centre.
Some rooms have a minimum stay length over New Year’s, and not every room has views of the bridge, but you really have to be organised early to get into this exclusive hotel.
Pullman Quay Grand
It doesn’t get much more luxurious than the Pullman Quay Grand whose apartments have a spa bath and balcony overlooking the harbour.
Located at Circular Quay, its rooms face either the harbour or the Royal Botanic Gardens and there’s a pool and hot tub on site.
Melbourne hotels you can still book
Unlike Sydney that concentrates the majority of its fireworks around the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Melbourne has four locations across the CBD - Docklands, Treasury Gardens, Alexandra Gardens and Flagstaff Gardens - that feature dramatic fireworks displays, so there's a little more choice when it comes to views.
QT Melbourne
Located on Russell Street, in between all four of Melbourne’s fireworks sites, QT Melbourne is right in the centre of the New Year’s Eve action.
It’s famous for its rooftop New Year’s Eve party which, for $285 a ticket, includes food, drinks and a spectacular view.
If you’re wanting to stay the night, there are also a few rooms left with city views, just check which direction you’re facing before booking.
The hotel is also super close to the Regent Theatre, Federation Square and the Collins Street shopping precinct, so there’s plenty to do if you want to extend your stay.
WRAP on Southbank
Just set back from the bank of the Yarra River, WRAP on Southbank offers views over Melbourne’s CBD with some rooms still available to book for New Year’s Eve.
There’s also an indoor pool, fitness centre and restaurant on site to help you start the New Year right, and is located just a six minute walk from the main Southbank Promenade.
Not all rooms have views of the fireworks so check before booking.
Scape Living at Aurora
A short walk from the Flagstaff Gardens fireworks site, Scape Living at Aurora has beautifully modern studios, one bedroom and two bedroom apartments.
It also boasts a stunning rooftop pool terrace and is really close to the Melbourne Central shopping precinct and some of Melbourne’s best cafes and restaurants, so there will be plenty to keep you occupied during your stay.
Some rooms with city views are still available for New Year’s Eve but check which direction the room is facing before booking. There are also some dog-friendly rooms available if you’re travelling with your furry friend.
