Like so many people, Audree Kopp often wore her hair tie around her wrist, that was until it caused a painful infection.

The Kentucky-born woman initially thought the huge lump that formed on her wrist was from a spider bite but when it just got worse after a few days, Kopp found out it was a serious infection from her glittery pink hair tie.

"I didn't believe it at first," Kopp told WLKY in Kentucky.

"I thought that it was a spider bite, or something else, not from wearing hair ties."

Kopp's had to undergo emergency surgery, where her doctor had to create an incision in her wrist to drain the fluid and get her back to normal.

According to doctors, she had contracted the infection after bacteria got into her body from a tiny cut on her wrist.

"They said I needed surgery, and thank God I caught it in time, or I could have had sepsis," Kopp said.

Kopp was lucky to avoid blood poisoning which, according to doctors, can be fatal.

"You can't put all these hair ties around the wrist particularly because it can cause problems with the skin, it can cause infection," said Dr Amit Gupta, who treated Kopp.

"It could have been a whole different ball game," she said. "Once it gets into your bloodstream, people have been known to go into a coma, your body shuts down. It could have been worse."
