What the beauty team really think of rhode's latest launch

rhode lip peptide review
We have thoughts on rhode's new lip launch rhode/Cosmopolitan

As of yet, I haven't met a rhode launch that I haven't loved. The peptide glazing milk has a firm place in my beauty line-up and the pineapple refresh cleanser is one I always recommend to friends that want a gentle yet effective cleanser. Every time I whip out my phone, it's met with ooooh and aaaahs about my case, the rhode peptide lip tint phone case (in espresso, natch) which I'm understandably never without. Honestly, I'm such a rhode girlie, it hurts. When I interviewed brand founder, Hailey Bieber back in 2023 (whoops, sorry, lil name drop for ya) she hinted at more colour coming from the brand, and then the pocket blushes launched and now a partner for the peptide lip tint– the Peptide Lip Shape.

Unlike a typical lip liner, the brand touts this as a lip shaper that you can use to contour, enhance and define your pout as you please so I was immediately intrigued. The stick is rounded, not pointy, and is thick – precision isn't the point here. Available in 11 shades to suit all skin tones, we put the new launch to the test amongst our beauty team to grab the honest reviews.

Shades tried – Lift, Twist, Lunge

Chunky lip liners are nothing new, let’s be fr. Refy’s Blur Liner and Haus Labs’ Le Monster Lip Crayon are just two to name a few of my favourites. So, when I saw rhode’s offering, I wasn’t as hyped as, well, everyone on TikTok.

For context, I nabbed three shades; Lift, a cool-toned pink and the lightest shade in the collection, as well as Twist and Lunge, two warm-toned nudes. I topped each lip with a layer of its matching Lip Peptide Tints; Ribbon for Lift and Toast for Twist and Lunge, which I was super satisfied with. I mean, who doesn’t love a 360 approach?

In terms of application, the liners felt super creamy and didn't drag on the lip at all, while the payoff was pigmented it didn't overpower the rest of my makeup. Think of these as a complimentary, natural liner, rather than a bold statement. The wear was impressive, too, though, I did have to reapply after eating – but for me, that’s nothing out of the ordinary. Oh, and as for the silicone ‘smudger’? I did not and will not be using it... my finger does just fine... Sorry, Hails!

Overall, as much as I hate to fall victim to the lore of the celebrity beauty brand, I would recommend these to a friend. Consider me a convert.

Shade tried – Bend

This wouldn’t be a rhode launch without a little innovation. The brand’s phenomenally popular products experiment with unique textures and playful ways to do makeup (hi Glazing Fluid; hi Pocket Blush!), and the Peptide Lip Shape is no different.

When doing my research, I discovered that Hailey describes this as a lip contour rather than a liner, adding soft dimension as opposed to a sharp line. My issue is, unfortunately, I love a lip liner – the classic kind. So, I was a little hesitant when giving this a go. But, hey-ho, in the name of serious beauty journalism I tested without preconceptions!

Firstly, the thick, dome-shaped nib isn’t what I’d usually go for, but I really liked how the soft line made my lips appear fuller without looking too ‘done’. I opted for Bend – described as a ‘soft peachy beige’ – which is slightly darker than my natural lip shade so I used it to slightly over line, adding extra volume.

As for the silicone smudging tool, I initially thought this would be useless but once again, eating my words. I found it helpful to neaten up the edges of my lips or to buff out the formula. And thanks to hydrating peptides, my lips felt supple and velvety even with a matte finish.

Overall, I’ll continue to use a sharp lip pencil if I’m after a bold look, but for the days where I’d like something softer, rhode has converted this once sceptical beauty writer for sure!

Shades tried: Balance and Lean

Being my first foray into the rhode universe, I was excited – to say the least. But as a girlie with chronically dry lips, I’m always hesitant to try a new lip stick, balm or gloss, which is why I was immediately impressed with the new Peptide Lip Shape. It’s formulated with amino acids to soothe the cracked edges of my lips, and the fenugreek gave a juicy, pouty finish.

I tried shades Balance (pictured), a caramel brown, and Lean, which is more of a medium pink-brown. I much prefer the chubby nib to the precise lip liners I’m used to, and the application was creamy with a smoothing effect on my dry patches. For my usual lip combo, I’ll diffuse the edges of a traditional liner with my finger, and while it’s handy that the Rhode lip shape comes with a silicone smudging tool, I found that the soft-focus effect didn’t need it.

I’m used to a matte finish making my lips look even drier, but not with this product. I found the muted, brown hues look super chic and velvety with a clear gloss on top. As for my lip combos, I paired Lean with Merit’s Shade Slick Tinted Lip Oil in Marrakech for a peachy brown pairing. With Balance, I leaned into the ‘90s vibe of the caramel brown hue and added a few dabs of Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil in Midnight Berry for a cherry-cola lip. The final verdict? I’m a Rhode babe now, and the Peptide Lip Shape will be living in my work bag until further notice.

Shades tried – Flex, Spin and Move

OK, ok, let's get the worst part over with. I hate the smudger. Yes, it's clever, but upon trialling this launch just don't go to use it and one of my ten fingers does just as good of a job. I would have preferred an ounce more of product itself. Because the good news is that it's thaaat good. For my day-to-day makeup, despite being in charge of things over here at Cosmo beauty, I have a five-product face, but lip liner is included every damn time. I have maybe 20 lip liners in my beauty stash that are mainly all variations on a theme – 90s brown, so this launch was firmly up my street.

Like muscle memory, I instantly went for the darkest shades, Move and Spin, but was so pleasantly surprised to see that they were both a hair too dark for my medium-deep skin tone. They work if I'm going for that dark brown lip but if I want a nude my-lips-but-better vibe, Stretch and Flex (pictured) are my zone. It's so so good to see brands being more inclusive when the talk about 'nudes' and clearly after the call out from Golloria on their pocket blushes (who has since spoken with the brand behind the scenes on their launches) rhode are proactively ensuring their launches work across the spectrum and we are here for it.

Texture-wise, it took a little getting used to as I'm a lot more au fait with the traditional fine-nibbed pencils. But I loved that, unlike trad liners, you can't really mess these up – perf for applying on the go.
