Barbra Streisand remembers “A Star Is Born” costar Kris Kristofferson after his death: 'He was something special'

"He was as charming as ever," Streisand recalled of performing with him prior to his death at age 88 — which also inspired tributes from Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire.

Barbra Streisand's fondness for her A Star Is Born leading man is as evergreen as the 1976 Hollywood classic.

After news broke Sunday that actor and musician Kris Kristofferson died at age 88, Streisand honored him in an emotional Instagram post that paid tribute to his life.

"The first time I saw Kris performing at the Troubadour club in L.A. I knew he was something special. Barefoot and strumming his guitar, he seemed like the perfect choice for a script I was developing, which eventually became A Star Is Born," Streisand wrote in the post alongside a photo of herself with Kristofferson on the film's poster as well as together on stage during a performance.

Streisand pointed to the pair's work on the film, which follows the often retold industry tale (remade by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in 2018) of a budding songstress (Streisand) as her career rises while that of her mentor and lover (Kristofferson) falls. In her note, Streisand pointed to the pair's Oscar-winning original song "Evergreen," which she singled out as the "main love theme" of the project — which also hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 around the time of the film's release.

"For my latest concert in 2019 at London’s Hyde Park, I asked Kris to join me on-stage to sing our other A Star Is Born duet, 'Lost Inside Of You,'" Streisand, 82, continued. "He was as charming as ever, and the audience showered him with applause. It was a joy seeing him receive the recognition and love he so richly deserved."

She shared a photo of the duo performing the song at the end of her post, before adding, "My thoughts go to Kris’ wife, Lisa who I know supported him in every way possible."

Other stars paid tribute to Kristofferson following the Grammy-winning musician's death, including Dolly Parton, with whom he recorded the duet "From Here to the Moon and Back" from the 2012 film Joyful Noise, in which both performers starred.

“What a great loss. What a great writer. What a great actor. What a great friend," Parton wrote of Kristofferson on Instagram. "I will always love you."

On X, fellow country star Reba McEntire honored Kristofferson in a post calling him "a gentleman, kind soul, and a lover of words," before finishing: "I am so glad I got to meet him and be around him. One of my favorite people. Rest in peace, Kris."
