Barbra Streisand to Release Her First New Song in 6 Years for “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” Series
Streisand said the upcoming song, "Love Will Survive," is a reminder "that even in the darkest of times, the power of love can triumph and endure"
New music from Barbra Streisand is on its way!
On April 17, the EGOT holder announced she's releasing her first new song in six years, "Love Will Survive," later this month for the upcoming Peacock and Sky Original series, The Tattooist of Auschwitz.
Composed by the legendary Hans Zimmer with Kara Talve, Walter Afanasieff and Charlie Midnight, "Love Will Survive" will be released on April 25 — and the song also marks Streisand's first for a TV series.
In a statement, Streisand revealed she was inspired to perform the song specifically for the series, which tells a love story between two Jewish individuals who meet at the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942, following the pair into their elderly years.
"Because of the rise in antisemitism around the world today, I wanted to sing 'Love Will Survive' in the context of this series, as a way of remembering the six-million souls who were lost less than 80 years ago," said Streisand. "And also to say that even in the darkest of times, the power of love can triumph and endure."
Based on a true story and inspired by Heather Morris' 2018 novel of the same name, The Tattooist of Auschwitz centers on a Slovakian Jewish man, Lali, who gets deported to Auschwitz and tasked with tattooing identification numbers on fellow prisoners. There, he meets Gita, and the pair become determined to keep each other alive while under constant watch by Nazis.
The series then follows a recently widowed Lali in his 80s, as he meets Morris, a then-aspiring writer, and recounts the story of his romance with Gita.
Jonah Hauer-King stars as young Lali, while Harvey Keitel plays the character in his later years. Anna Próchniak portrays Gita, while Melanie Lynskey acts as Morris.
"Barbra Streisand is one of the most renowned artists in the world, and we are deeply honored to be working with her," said Claire Mundell, executive producer for Synchronicity Films, one of the companies behind the series, in a statement.
"Barbra and her team have crafted the most beautiful song, based on Hans’ and Kara’s main theme for the show, and it sums up the key message of the series - love will survive," she continued.
Mundell then recalled, "Recording the song with Barbra’s iconic vocals and William Ross conducting the LSO at Abbey Road Studios was an unforgettable moment and a memory I will treasure forever. We are thrilled to be able to honor the memory of Lali and Gita in this way, with this beautiful original piece of music."
