'What dress?': Baffling cut-out bridal gown sparks confusion
2021 has dawned and despite our most fervent hopes it seems by and large to be exactly the same as 2020, and that goes for bridal fashion too.
The batty bridal trends that turned heads last year are alive and well, and some new, bizarre looks joining the melee as well.
The latest gown that has social media users in a flap is one for the history books, a lace number that somehow conjures early 00’s hipster vibes, and 80’s bridal lace all at once.
Cropping up in an eBay advertisement, the gown comes with a name almost as confusing as its style inspiration: Sexy See Through Mermaid Wedding Dress Sheer Applique Lace Open Back Bridal Gown.
The Sexy See Through Mermaid Wedding Dress Sheer Applique Lace Open Back Bridal Gown, as promised features a mermaid skirt cut, couple with a sheer lace material strategically cut to cover key body areas, while leaving other exposed.
Finishing the complicated look off is the aforementioned open back and high-neck.
The highly original lacework leaves the bride’s hip bones exposed in a very on-trend nod to the dreaded return of the hipster jeans and gives a slight glimpse of thigh before opening out into a sweeping skirt.
Retailing for a very reasonable AUD$200, the dress could be yours for just $25 international shipping with a complex, but not unreasonable refund and return policy also available.
Shared to social media, however, it seems buyers were not exactly scaling the walls to get at the original item.

Online users were left in hysterics over the baffling dress with dozens commenting on photos shared to Facebook.
“What dress?” one asked of the admittedly miscellaneous item.
“I’m insulted,” one person wrote, taking it all quite personally.
“Why when I look at this my first thought is about super-low jeans?!” was a relatable comment.
Another managed to categorise the look quite successfully.
“It’s like if a stripper costume, a figure skating costume, a synchronized swimming costume, a belly dancing costume and some curtains all came together into one garment,” the woman wrote.
“It looks like a lace tankini with boy shorts bottoms,” was another’s attempt at understanding the style.
It’s not the first time a wedding dress has divided opinion online.
The bridal look that sparked the most serious conversation last year was a completely sheer bodysuit from an online fashion designer, featuring a sparkling bodysuit underneath a gauzy transparent skirt with a waist-high split.
