Matt Agnew's $30k custom-made Bachelor finale ring
Chelsie McLeod walked away from The Bachelor Australia finale last night with Matt Agnew’s heart and a very expensive gift.
Right after Matt professed his love for the 28-year-old chemical engineer, he pulled out a ginormous 3.7-carat gemstone and clumsily put it on Chelsie’s middle finger.
The sparkler was a custom design by bespoke Australian label, Larsen Jewellery, and featured a cushion-cut grey spinel gemstone, flanked by two shield-cut diamonds.
Senior Jeweller, Kate Reid, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that Matt was very hands-on in the design.
“In preparation for the finale episode, I met with Matt for a one-on-one jewellery consultation where Matt, along with the team at Larsen Jewellery, designed the beautiful bespoke ring.
“We showed Matt a variety of designs and precious stones and he was taken by the rarity of the colours and shapes of some truly unique gemstones, carefully considering his final selection.”
It’s believed the ring is valued at $30,000, according to Now to Love.
Middle finger
Viewers were a little confused by Matt’s decision to place the ring on Chelsie’s middle finger, with some suggesting he wanted to completely avoid the appearance of a proposal, while also not walking the ‘promise ring’ line that Sam Wood did with Snezana in 2015.
How much verbal setting up do you have to do before you present someone with a ring at the end of the Bachelor so they don’t immediately assume you are proposing #TheBachelorAU

Fans divided
While there was a lot of love for the gesture, not everyone was enamoured with Matt’s taste in jewellery.

So how does Chelsie’s ring stack up?
Matt isn’t the first man in the Bachelor Australia franchise to whip out a ring box at the finale, with Blake Garvey presenting Sam Frost with an engagement ring in 2014, Sam Wood giving Snezana a promise ring in 2015, and Sam Cochrane proposing to Tara Pavlovic at the end of their stint on Bachelor in Paradise.
While her engagement was famously short-lived, Sam Frost’s ring was a square-cut diamond surrounded by a halo of smaller diamonds which was valued at the time at $58,000. A year later she auctioned it off for $31,000.
Tara’s engagement was also doomed to fail, but she was given an $11,000 sparkler by Sydney-based jewellers GS Diamonds, which she eventually returned to Sam who donated it to charity. Luckily, Tara has found love again and is now engaged to her new love, Nick Shepherdson.
Sam and Snez’s love story meanwhile, is one for the ages, with the pair now sharing three daughters together.
However, the promise ring Snez was presented with at the end of their season was widely panned as a ‘cheezel’ ring, and was fortunately later replaced by a much nicer engagement ring.
