Man dumps girlfriend live on Aussie radio: 'Heartbreaking'

A man went from telling his girlfriend he loved her live on the Kyle and Jackie O Show to breaking up with her within minutes in a segment that was supposed to be romantic but quickly turned disastrous.

The man, called Dave, rang into the show to win a free romantic dinner at a Sydney restaurant but to do so, he had to surprise his girlfriend, Rachel, with a declaration of love.

The pair has only been dating for two months, but Dave was adamant he was in love and ready to say "I love you" for the first time.

When Rachel was introduced on-air, she was told Dave had something special to tell her in the lead up to Valentine's Day and it was clear she was nervous.

"So you know how we've been kicking it off really well," Dave nervously started. "I feel like we have a different type of connection, I just wanted to say that I really do love you, and I'm just wondering if you love me back?"

Rachel made it clear she was surprised, saying, "Oh, um thank you? I feel like this is a little too soon?"

"Excuse me?" Dave responded, before adding, "I just thought that love has no time limit. You don't have to wait a certain time to say 'I love you' and I just felt that and thought the feelings were mutual."

While Rachel thought he was "so sweet" to say he loves her, she told him she wished they spoke about their feelings in private as opposed to live on radio.

"So you don't feel the same? Is that what you're saying?" Dave questioned.

While Rachel wasn't quite there just yet, she said she could see herself falling in love with him, but just felt it was too soon at this stage.

"I really like you but I didn't think we were at that serious stage yet," she said.

"The feelings are growing. I really appreciate you saying it but I just think it's too soon to say that L word. I definitely did not expect this, especially on radio."

Dave then dropped a bombshell, saying: "Wow, I really thought that the way you look at me and the way we went out together... I don't even know what to say - this is actually heartbreaking.

"Honestly, I was thinking about asking the question of marriage within this year,' Dave revealed, a clearly shocked Rachel responded, "What?!"

"I was going to drop the knee by the end of the year and I thought you'd love me the way I love you - and if that's not the case, then I don't really see a future," he told her.

Dave explained that he thought telling her he loved her live on radio was "the most romantic thing I've ever done".

"I confessed my love to you in front of millions of listeners and I'm not a public affectionate type of guy - and you know that as well," he said.

"I really stepped out of my comfort zone and you just shot that in my face."

Kyle Sandilands told him he couldn't just break up with Rachel moments after telling her he was in love with her.

However, Dave just said: "I don't know if I can continue on with this," breaking down in tears, saying he would rather take another girl out to dinner because Rachel doesn't "deserve" it.

Jackie 'O' Henderson stepped in and told him: "Oh come on Dave, just because she's not there yet, you can't just blame her and break up with her."

Rachel asked to talk in private, but Dave simply ended the call, saying: "I know what I want and I know it's not you.

"I'm just going to leave this call and I wish you all the best... I'm sitting here shaking because I thought you were the one."
