The Spider is Australia’s favourite sex position

Spiders in the bedroom? For most people this idea is terrifying. Yet, this might just be the one spider that won’t make you run the other way - The Spider sex position.

In fact, a recent study by WeThrift, found that The Spider is Australia’s favourite sex position, and could be just the Christmas spice up you’re looking for.

The research team examined Google Trends data for a country-by-country analysis of the most popular sex positions around the world.

It's Australia's favourite, but what is The Spider?

The Spider is said to be one of the more intimate positions and involves a couple facing each other in a seated position.

The receiver lies back first, while the other partner goes in between their legs to achieve penetration. Then, this partner also lies back, allowing for either partner to thrust.

Why is it so popular?

In an interview with Men’s Health, founder of Modern Intimacy, Kate Balestrieri, Psy.D., explained that whilst potentially difficult to sustain for long periods of time, The Spider may increase pleasure for both partners due to each person being horizontal - and this increasing access to the G-spot and prostate.

The study also found Australia to be the sixth most sexually curious country, with the United States taking first place, and revealed the country’s most popular sex toy was the cock ring.

The pandemic took a toll on sex lives everywhere, with 30 per cent of people reporting a decline in sexual activity.

However, as restrictions have eased, searches for ‘sex’ have increased by 58 per cent. The most Googled sex questions included: how to squirt (84,000 global searches) and how to increase sex drive (25,000 global searches).

“Low sex drive, or loss of libido, is extremely common in both men and women," Earim Chaudry, MD of men’s health platform Manual, said of the study.

"There are a variety of internal and external factors that can affect your sexual desire, from your hormone levels to your sleeping habits, stress and anxiety.

"While a low sex drive is not usually problematic, it can cause problems for relationships and self-esteem."

Fortunately, there are a variety of natural ways you can increase your libido or your partners, which Earim explains here:

Reduce stress

"High stress and anxiety levels can cause a barrier to sexual functioning. Individuals with a stressful job, challenging responsibilities or other demands, may feel fatigued, and as a result, have a decreased libido. When stress and anxiety levels are managed, sexual function and desire tend to improve."

Get enough sleep

"Poor sleeping habits can lead to low energy, fatigue and tiredness. Often an outcome of this is low libido or decreased interest in sexual activity. If you are occasionally experiencing insomnia, try finding a method that will improve your sleep habits. If you have a more serious problem, it’s important to contact your doctor for treatment."

Keep active

"Exercise can improve sexual function and libido in both men and women. When it comes to finding the best workout, strength training is key. It’s all about increasing your testosterone levels, which is the hormone responsible for sexual arousal."

Watch your alcohol intake

"Alcohol can have a major influence on your libido level. While alcohol may enhance your sexual desires at the moment, it’s a depressant so it only boosts it temporarily. If you are experiencing a low sex desire, then it’s all the more reason to avoid drinking alcohol” says Mr Chaudry.
