Aussie woman's IKEA hack transforms shoe cabinets into 'beautiful furniture piece'

One handy DIYer has created a luxe custom piece of furniture for her home.

It’s not uncommon to hack IKEA furniture, but this transformation has totally stunned thousands of DIY fans.

Taking the Hemnes shoe cabinet, one woman totally converted it into a stunning one-off custom piece of furniture that fits perfectly with the aesthetic of her home.

After almost two years in the making, the woman finally shared the end results on the IKEA Tips, Hacks and More Facebook page to millions of fans, with thousands absolutely “loving” her hack.

“I finally completed this project after almost two years of off and on working on it. It started as grey shoe cabinets, but I wanted colour and a thin cabinet to “land” on when I came inside,” she wrote.

Posting pictures of her clever creation, the “stunning design” attracted more than 50,000 likes and 3,800 comments from others wanting to know exactly how she did it.

The woman explained how she pulled it all together, saying she used the shoe cabinets from IKEA as the base before making it her own.

“I used three Hemnes cabinets that I attached together, then added a 2x10x10 piece of wood to the top. Lots of sanding and painting,” she said.

Fellow IKEA fans loved the striking green colour, which she had colour-matched by a hardware store. She finished off the design with new handles before styling it with some decor pieces.

“I absolutely love this!! Fabulous vision and execution to a beautiful furniture piece,” One impressed person wrote.

“Love it!! Really well done, and I adore the green colour! It’s my accent colour in my home also!” Another person added.

The popular four-compartment IKEA shoe cabinets are known for their practicality, style, and functional slimness, making them perfect for narrow hallways or garage spaces.

Retailing for $249 each, the extra detail added completely transformed it into a luxury piece of furniture for less than $1000.

Others added that it didn't look anything like the original IKEA piece, with one person saying she did a “great job of transforming it.”

“Love it! Great job. Thanks for the inspiration. Been thinking of doing something similar,” another added.

But it seems shoppers are still huge fans of the cabinets, even when they aren’t hacked, with IKEA fans saying they aren’t just useful to store shoes in, but some in handy for reusable shopping bags, dog leads and even towel storage in the bathroom.

“Absolutely love this ‘shoe’ cabinet for all my knick-knacks. It makes great underwear, socks storage and also storage for towels. It is nice and slim and looks so stylish. I am buying another one for my hallway,” one super impressed shopper said.
