Leibovitz said she immersed herself in Jenner's world while they spent two days in her house trying to capture the perfect pictures of the Olympian.

“Our whole team—and it was a team—wanted to make it a success for her, and to take her over that hill,” she said.

Addressing the front cover picture, where Jenner sits in an ivory corset with her hands behind her back, Leibovitz said she got her inspiration for the attire from looking at old pictures of Katharine Hepburn.

“That was one idea with the corset. I wanted to be more conservative with her. I was looking at photos of Katharine Hepburn," she said.

"This was an acquired idea of: What is a woman? What should a woman look like? How does a woman dress up? Who is Caitlyn?

"But as the days wore on, Leibovitz said Caitlyn took more and more control of the shoot. “[Caitlyn] is an Olympic athlete after all,” Leibovitz said.

Leibovitz also reflected on her historic shots of Demi Moore's naked pregnancy cover and her 1981 cover featuring a nude John Lennon embracing Yoko Ono.

Lennon was shot and killed on the very same day Leibovitz took that picture.

The Caitlyn Jenner cover photo broke all records for Vanity Fair, which saw over nine million people visit their website in one day.
