Angel Reese Pays Off Her Mother’s Mortgage as Surprise Birthday Gift and Tells Her She Can Retire

Angel Reese is making her mom’s birthday wishes come true!

On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Chicago Sky star, 22, invited her mother "Mama Angel," whose real name is Angel Webb Reese, onto her YouTube show Unapologetically Angel. They spent almost an hour discussing Reese’s rise to fame and basketball career before her mom’s birthday surprise was revealed.

“Well it’s your birthday today,” Reese said as a birthday cake was presented to her mom.

“Before we sing 'Happy Birthday,' you said that if your mortgage was paid off that you would retire or you won’t work,” she continued. “You can pick if you want to work still, your mortgage today has been paid.”

Reese’s mom almost dropped the cake in shock before an assistant took it away.

Reese continued, “Today your mortgage has been paid, you ain’t got to worry about your mortgage no more and if you want to still work and keep yourself, you can keep yourself busy. But Jamel has it handled, shout out to Jamel for making it happen, and Janine of course. Your mortgage is paid are you still going to work?"

Reese’s mom struggled to find words to speak as she shook her head before replying, “Are you serious?”

Having been also told that she could stay with Reese whenever she wanted as the WNBA star plans to get a house in Chicago this year, she burst into floods of tears and was overcome with emotion.

Reese and the show’s crew sang "Happy Birthday" but were unable to light the cake in the studio due to safety reasons.

“That was my biggest goal in life to retire you and pay your mortgage or whatever you wanted not to work,” Reese said to her mom. "You're a hard-working woman, you don't need me for no money. That's why I always say, 'She never needed me for no money.' "

Mama Angel confessed she was stunned as she’d already been gifted a Four Seasons gift card for her birthday.

“Now you know I come harder than that,” Reese joked in response.

The celebration came after the WNBA star announced that she had teamed up with McDonald’s to become their first female athlete with a special meal.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Reese revealed as a child she and her brother Julian would “fight sometimes over the Happy Meal toys.”

"You know how your parents always say, 'There's food at home ?" she asks. "So I used to save money so I could eat at McDonald's."

Reese - who was selected as the 7th pick by Chicago Sky in the 2024 WNBA Draft - hasn’t revealed her net worth but doesn’t just rely on basketball as her source of income.

According to USA Today, her brand deals between 2022 and 2023 totaled around $1.7 million.  Reebok, Playstation and Amazon have been among her many endorsements.
