André 3000 and Erykah Badu's son, Seven Sirius Benjamin, inherited their musical talents.

The “Ms. Jackson” singer, born Andre Benjamin, dated the R&B vocalist in the '90s. During their relationship, the couple welcomed their only child together, son Seven Sirius Benjamin, in November 1997.

Since then, André 3000 and Badu have made rare comments about their child and evolving friendship in interviews, including how they co-parented Seven.

The former Outkast member reflected on his role as a father during an August 2014 interview with The New York Times. When Seven was a teenager, he moved in with his father in Atlanta, and it was a "positive" change for André 3000, who felt like it "refocused" his life.

Despite growing up in Dallas with his mother, Badu revealed that Seven takes after his father in many ways. She told Rolling Stone in November 2020 that her son shares similar characteristics to André 3000, who she called “one of the most caring people” she knew.

“Seven adopted this same energy from him,” she explained. “They both have this look on their face as if they’re saying, ‘I hope it works for you.’ No matter what it is. They’re nonjudgmental people.”

The former couple dated briefly in the '90s, with Badu telling Rolling Stone in November 2020 that while the rapper is “one of my best friends” now, they didn't have an instant friendship after initially meeting.

“We were attracted to each other first," she said. "We had stuff in common, but we didn’t learn all of that until over the years.”

Seven is the son of two renowned musicians.

His father was one half of the hip-hop duo Outkast with Antwan Patton, known professionally as Big Boi.

Outkast was formed in 1992 and went on to become one of the most influential hip-hop groups, with the duo releasing six albums during their run before their indefinite hiatus in 2007. They won six Grammy awards, including accolades for their albums Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, which spawned hits such as “Hey Ya!” and “Ms. Jackson.”

Since then, André 3000 has had a successful solo career, including the release of his debut solo album New Blue Sun in November 2023. It earned three Grammy nominations, giving the artist 28 total nods.

Meanwhile, Badu is best known for her contribution to the neo-soul movement. Her debut album Baduizm, released in 1997, won best R&B album at the Grammys in 1998 and featured the hit "On & On.” She was nominated 20 times at the Grammys and won four times, including best rap performance by a duo or group in 2000 for her collaboration with The Roots on the song "You Got Me.”

While André 3000 is from Atlanta, he spent some time in Dallas, where his son was born and raised. The Dallas Morning News reported in September 2024 that the rapper lived in Texas for two years when Seven was a teenager.

However, André 3000 shared a life update about his son during an August 2014 interview with The New York Times, which included a move to the Peach State.

“Seven’s been going to school in Atlanta for the last two years,” he said. “I wake up every morning, take him to school, pick him up from school, going to soccer games, going to wrestling matches. Total dad, which is cool, because so much of that was taken by my early Outkast years.”

André 3000 added, “We were at the height, so a lot of the time that should have been [spent] with him, I’m on the road entertaining everybody else.”

For Badu, quality education was at the top of the list for her children, including her son Seven. (She has two younger children from previous relationships.)

He was initially homeschooled for kindergarten and first grade, with Badu explaining in a 2009 interview that she “wanted to give [him] special attention academically, to give him an advantage.” She said that this helped her son learn “how to solve problems in a nontraditional way,” which served him when he was enrolled in a traditional school.

Badu added, “He enjoys challenges ... He pushes himself ... He does his homework voluntarily.”

The singer-songwriter also shared that he strived to do his best by having good attendance, arriving to school on time and staying organized.

“I don’t have any idea what Seven is going to choose to do, but he knows how to be disciplined and how to learn, and because of that he’s one of the top students in his school, and one of the top students in Dallas," Badu said.

His hard work paid off, with Badu posting on X in April 2016 that her son was accepted into four colleges. At the time, she shared what he was leaning toward studying, adding in another post, “We got a psychology /arts and science major. Go 7.”

While Seven maintains a low profile today, he exhibited his musical talents growing up. In March 2008, Badu told PEOPLE that she and her son enjoyed playing electric guitar together.

“He plays upright bass in his orchestra at school,” she revealed. “He took piano for four years. And he has a beautiful voice. He probably has the same eclectic tastes that his father has. I would say his father is all in his DNA!”

Seven also helped his mom step up her game when recording her music.

“My son saw me singing songs into my phone and putting them on my voicemail,” she recalled. “He goes, ‘Mom, you don’t have to do that. All you have to do is use a microphone on your computer and open up this program called Garageband.’ I began doing that and wrote songs so quickly.”

Despite their relationship ending, André 3000 and Badu have co-parented their son over several decades.

In an October 2014 interview with Vibe, the rapper said that he and his ex “joke a lot,” even after their split, including Badu referring to him as her “baby daddy.”

“People just don’t know our personal life. We joke like that on the phone,” he explained. “She calls me her baby daddy and I call her my baby mama. It’s funny to us now because it’s such a talked-down type term. It is what it is. It’s totally a punch line.”

Even Seven had his own thoughts about his parents’ dynamic, with André 3000 adding, “Our son is about to be 17 and he tells us, ‘You guys are nuts.’ “

For her part, Badu called André 3000 one of her “best friends on the planet” during a November 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, adding, “Over these years, we’ve just become closer and closer as friends, as humans, as man, as woman.”

“I care for him so very much, about his livelihood, his art, his feelings,” she continued. “And I’m a super big fan of him. ... We’re really close. We laugh all the time, talk about things."

He has two half-siblings

While Seven is André 3000’s only child, Badu is also a mother to two more children.

In July 2004, Badu welcomed her daughter Puma Sabti Curry with rapper Tracy Lynn Curry, known professionally as The D.O.C. The singer later welcomed daughter Mars Merkaba in February 2009 with producer and rapper Elpadaro F. Electronica Allah, a.k.a. Jay Electronica.
