America's Favorite Pie Was Just Revealed—And the Results Might Shock You

It doesn’t get any more patriotic than ordering your favorite pie to be delivered straight to your doorstep. With the sheer amount of convenience available at our fingertips on a daily basis, it was only a matter of time before ordering a pie online became more convenient for some than making one from scratch.

In celebration of the upcoming March 14 Pi Day, Instacart revealed a list of its most-ordered pies on the popular delivery platform and it probably wouldn’t be too hard for you to guess which pie came out on top. According to the company’s Pi Day report, in true American fashion, the sweet, flaky and buttery nature of apple pie accounted for 29-percent of all pie deliveries last year.

To put things into perspective, apple pie’s first place position comes in 6-percent higher than pumpkin pie, and a shocking 20-percent higher than pecan pie. Other pie classics such as cherry pie and lemon meringue pie rounded out the fourth and fifth positions respectively, however paling in comparison to the numbers apple pie put up.

“It’s no surprise that Apple Pie takes the top spot nationwide. It’s a timeless classic that feels as American as, well, apple pie,” Alex Orellana, Instacart’s trends analyst said.

To even further speak to the numbers, when analyzing the type of pie each state loves more than anywhere else, apple pie really only accounts for New York and Michigan. Whereas large swaths of the country are made up of pumpkin, cherry and pecan pie lovers. So, despite the majority of the country preferring other pie flavors, apple pie still reigns supreme as the fan-favorite nationwide.

“Our Pie Report further highlights how deeply this rich, sweet dessert resonates with Southern food culture,” Orellana said. “In the Midwest, cherry pie stands out, likely a nod to the region’s deep-rooted connection to cherry farming. Meanwhile, pumpkin pie has earned year-round love in the Southwest, offering comfort far beyond its traditional fall season.”

What we see here is yet another example of how our tastes vary as a country from region to region. Other standout examples include sweet potato pie being largely ordered in Southern and Midwestern cities like Atlanta and Detroit. And Key lime pie, a treat that is heavily trending in San Francisco, gets ordered upwards of six times more than the national average.
