The Amazing Race’s 14 new teams are preparing for the wildest trip of their lives, but nothing could’ve prepared them for this.
While announcing the cast for its upcoming 37th season (which premieres on CBS Wednesday, March 5 at 9:30/8:30c with a 90-minute episode), the series also teased fans with a new “Fork in the Road” twist which will force racers to choose between two parallel routes to the Pit Stop. According to host Phil Keoghan, every single episode this season will have some sort of surprise or twist involved, putting the racers on edge (and on their marks) at every turn.

“You’re going to see a few jaws dropping throughout the season because people are like, ‘Wait, what?'” the host told TVLine’s Kimberly Roots Wednesday during Atlanta’s SCAD TVfest. (Watch the full interview in the video above.)

He continued: “Imagine you get to a fork in the road… the direction you choose could have major consequences on whether you are eliminated or not, and whether you actually do well or not. It’s a bit of a change from things that we’ve normally done before, but hey, this is Season 37 and it is a season of surprises.”
Keoghan also detailed some of the season’s scariest stunts and most breath-taking destinations, while giving heaps of kudos to the show’s diverse new cast of racers (including Pops’ and his son’s monstrous biceps).
“Every team surprises us,” he said. “We cast them, we have expectations, but no matter what, there are always surprises because we never really know how they’re going to react to the [stimuli] that we give them.”
