From L: Amanda Seyfried in New York City on March 5, 2025, and as Cosette in Les Misérables (2012)Amanda Seyfried is sharing a "regret" she has about her performance in Les Misérables.
While reflecting on playing Cosette in the 2012 movie musical during a video interview with GQ, published Thursday, March 20, the 39-year-old Long Bright River actress got candid on how she felt about her singing versus her costars'.
"Les Mis was an incredible movie. And oh God, I loved it. The costumes, the people. We were all really happy to be there. But I, unfortunately, was not technically ready or capable of the live singing in the way that I would have liked to be," Seyfried told the magazine.
Calling the "process" an "infuriating" experience, the Emmy winner explained, "I knew what I had to sing, but they're hard songs. And the acting part of it came naturally; it was very indulgent — it was beautiful to be like [singing], 'How strange this feeling that my life's begun at last.' "
"I was also worried about my accent, but that was the least of my worries," Seyfried said.

The actress noted the challenge of having "to be very musical" with a lot of her dialogue, which she felt ill-equipped to do properly compared to some of her castmates like Eddie Redmayne (Marius), Anne Hathaway (Fantine) and Samantha Barks (Éponine).
"It didn't hit the mark the way Eddie was hitting it and the way Samantha Barks is — I mean, she's miles better than all of us, technically," Seyfried told GQ. "Annie Hathaway, even when she's crying ... it was perfect. It's what made that movie f------ fly."
In comparison, the Mean Girls star believes she "was lacking, in a way that I really wish I hadn't been, and that's a regret I have."
"And everybody's like, 'You're crazy,' but I'm not," she added. "I know what I would've liked to sound like. I would've liked to sound like I sound now."

Certainly, Seyfried has shown off her vocal skills over the years in a way that is very much not lacking, including as Sophie Sheridan in Mamma Mia! (2008) and its 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again.
During a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the premiere of her limited series Long Bright River, which she also executive produced, the actress was asked about a third Mamma Mia! movie, prompting her to joke, "Show me the money!"
In all seriousness, Seyfried continued, "Producer Judy Craymer is always working on it, but Universal still has to release Wicked 2. The first Wicked had to stall when Mamma Mia! 2 was getting made."
"It’s an either/or situation with musicals," explained Seyfried, 39. "And I have this theory that Universal just knows we’re going to do it, so they’re not in any rush."
Long Bright River is now streaming in its entirety, exclusively on Peacock.
