Alison Brie Says She Rewatched “Community” Episodes Ahead of the Movie Sequel (Exclusive)
The yet-to-be filmed movie will revisit the characters from the popular comedy series, which ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2015
Alison Brie took a walk down memory lane to prepare for one of her upcoming movie roles.
Ahead of the premiere for her new thriller, Together, at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, the actress, 42, told PEOPLE she recently rewatched episodes of Community in anticipation of filming the movie sequel to the hit comedy series.
"I was having a meeting with [series creator] Dan Harmon, and we were talking about the Community movie and I wanted to rewatch some classic Annie episodes, so I did, and they were great," she says, referring to her character Annie Edison, one of the students at the fictional community college where the show is set.
Brie first revealed back in August 2022 that there were behind-the-scenes discussions taking place to bring Community — which ran for six seasons from 2009 and 2015 — to the big screen. "There's been movement," she said on The Wrap's UnWrapped podcast at the time. "There's been some talks. People are talking and certain things — wheels are turning."
Brie's Community costar, Joel McHale, shared another update two years later, telling GQ in July 2024 that the movie "hasn't been shot yet" — but "we have the money, and that's a huge step." He added, "And hopefully, people still want to see it. And Peacock's paying for it. And so I can't wait to do it. I'll say vaguely next year. How about that?"
Months later, in December, cast member Ken Jeong, who will reprise his role as Spanish teacher Ben Chang, revealed that he had read a script for the Community movie — written by Harmon and former show writer Andrew Guest — and it made him "emotional."
"[It] just brought me right back, and that’s all I’m legally allowed to say,” he told TV Insider, echoing McHale's comments that a potential production start date remained unclear. “There is a script, there is a plan. We just don’t know when [it will happen]. Once that’s agreed upon, it’ll be magical and real emotional."
Anticipating how it would feel to have the cast back together again, the Masked Singer judge, 55, added: “I think being on set experiencing that again [will be] so gratifying. Words can’t even express.”
While Brie is preparing to return to the Greendale Community College campus, she is also busy promoting Together, which costars her husband, Dave Franco. (The pair also served as co-producers.)
The actress told PEOPLE at Sundance that the couple's "style of working" on projects like this is to completely immerse themselves while on set — but then switch completely into off mode once they are done.
"We allow it to be all-encompassing and then when we get home [after the movie wraps], we can chill out," Brie explains. But when the work day ends amid production, she jokes, "we just lay in bed like vampires and sleep."
