Alec and Hilaria Baldwin are stepping back into the spotlight with their upcoming TLC reality series The Baldwins, which follows the family-of-nine’s life in the aftermath of the devastating 2021 Rust set shooting. After a prop gun that Alec was holding was accidentally fired, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza, the Beetlejuice alum was tried for involuntary manslaughter last year–and according to the couple, it was a “cathartic” choice to have cameras filming the whole time. In a rare interview shared on February 11, Alec got vulnerable as he opened up about how Hilaria helped him get through the post-Rust legal drama and negative tabloid attention.

“I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have her,” Alec told the publication about emotionally and mentally leaning on the Manual Not Included author through the difficult ordeal. “I don’t know what would’ve happened to me.”

Filming of the reality series, which airs February 23, came at a tough time for the couple–cameras were rolling right before Baldwin was tried in July in front of a New Mexico jury with a potential sentence for 18 months in prison. While Alec pleaded not guilty, arguing that he didn’t pull the trigger and he had no knowledge that the prop gun would be loaded with real ammunition, he was hit with a civil suit from Hutchins’s family as well as the involuntary manslaughter charge. During their courtroom appearances, Alec was photographed leaning on his wife of over a decade–a dynamic viewers will get to see in their reality series, according to People.

Even before they found out that the judge dismissed the involuntary manslaughter case three days in, alleging that the state had withheld information, the Baldwins saw the cameras as an avenue to tell their story rather than an intrusion during a highly emotional situation.

“It was an opportunity for us to actually speak,” Hilaria told People, calling the show a “really safe space.” She added, “I think it was also very cathartic, almost like a diary, during a very unsure time of our life. That felt both terrifying and like it could get us through day by day.”

In addition to showing a behind-the-scenes look at the Rust legal aftermath on The Baldwins, the couple will also dive into controversial aspects of their marriage, including their 26-year age gap and why they don’t have a prenup, according to Hilaria.

“Telling your story is one thing, and showing your story is something else,” the yoga expert told the publication. “It felt authentic, it felt human. It felt very empowering.”
