A24 Sets Summer Release For Celine Song’s Matchmaker Movie ‘Materialists’

A24 has set a June 13 nationwide theatrical release for Celine Song’s next movie, Materialists.

The pic, which stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, follows a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker who finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.

Song directed, wrote and produced the movie. David Hinojosa of 2AM produces alongside Killer Films.

Song’s 2023 romance, Past Lives, world premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. The pic starred Greta Lee and Tee Yoo as Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends. They are wrested apart after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. Twenty years later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront notions of love and destiny.

The feature grossed $11.3M at the domestic box office and over $42M worldwide.

A24 already had June 13 set aside for a wide release. Also opening that weekend are an untitled Shudder theatrical release and the live-action take of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon from Universal.

A24 has three movies scheduled for March: On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (March 7), the John Malkovich and Ayo Edebiri horror comedy Opus (March 14) and the Jenna Ortega-Paul Rudd movie Death of a Unicorn (March 28) which is world premiering at SXSW.
