Yahoo Lifestyle ‘9-1-1,’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘The Rookie,’ ‘Shifting Gears,’ ‘Will Trent’ Renewed at ABC
ABC is renewing four dramas and one comedy series, Variety has learned.
The Disney-owned broadcaster has picked up new seasons of “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Rookie,” and “Will Trent” as well as “Shifting Gears.” The renewals will bring “9-1-1” to Season 9, “Grey’s Anatomy” to Season 22, “The Rookie” to Season 8, “Shifting Gears” to Season 2, and “Will Trent” to Season 4.

ABC had previously announced renewals for both “High Potential” and the hit comedy “Abbott Elementary.” That means that the only current ABC show still awaiting word on a renewal is “Doctor Odyssey.” ABC has opted not to order any pilots this season, but did order the “9-1-1” spinoff “9-1-1: Nashville” straight-to-series, with Chris O’Donnell set for a lead role.
Of today’s renewals, only “Shifting Gears” was seen as a toss up for a new season. The Tim Allen-Kat Dennings multi-cam suffered a noticeable drop off in the ratings since its January debut. The show notched 7.8 million viewers in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings in its January premiere, while the finale in March dropped to 5.17 million in the same time period. That is a fall off of approximately 33%, not accounting for streaming viewership. ABC had touted a strong start to the show on streaming, but has not released additional info on its performance on Hulu since January.
Still, ABC has no other comedies on its schedule save for “Abbott” next season, as “The Conners” is wrapping up its run this spring.
“Doctor Odyssey,” which hails from Ryan Murphy and his overall deal with Disney’s 20th Television, is more costly than a typical network show according to sources and also has not made a major dent in the ratings. The cruise ship-set drama notched 5.96 million viewers in Live+7 in its September debut, while the most recent episode for which data is available (March 20) drew 5.19 million. Again, ABC revealed the show’s first episode had hit 16.5 million crossplatform viewers after 35 days, but have not crowed much beyond that since November.
“9-1-1” stars Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Kenneth Choi, Aisha Hinds, Ryan Guzman, and Gavin McHugh. Murphy created the series with Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, with all three executive producing and Minear serving as showrunner. Bassett, Krause, John J. Gray, Brad Buecker, Kristen Reidel, Lyndsey Beaulieu, Ted Griffen and Robert M. Williams also serve as executive producers. 20th Television produces in association with Ryan Murphy Television and Brad Falchuk Teley-Vision.
The cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” includes Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens, Jr., Kevin McKidd, Caterina Scorsone, Camilla Luddington, Kelly McCreary, Kim Raver, Chris Carmack, Anthony Hill, Alexis Floyd, Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, and Niko Terho. Shonda Rhimes executive produces under her Shondaland banner along with Betsy Beers. Meg Marinis serves as executive producer and showrunner, taking over from Krista Vernoff at the outset of Season 20. Vernoff remains an executive producer along with Mark Gordon, Debbie Allen, and Zoanne Clack. 20th Television is the studio.
“The Rookie” stars Nathan Fillion, Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan, Shawn Ashmore, and Lisseth Chavez. Lionsgate Television produces in partnership with 20th Television. Alexi Hawley is creator and executive producer. Mark Gordon, Fillion, Michelle Chapman, Bill Norcross and Brynn Malone are executive producers on the series.
“Will Trent” stars Ramón Rodríguez, Erika Christensen, Iantha Richardson, Jake McLaughlin, with Sonja Sohn and Gina Rodriguez. Executive producers are Liz Heldens, Daniel Thomsen, Karin Slaughter, Oly Obst, Howard Deutch, Ellen Marie Blum and’ Rodriguez. Heldens and Thomsen also serve as showrunners.
“Shifting Gears” stars Allen, Dennings, Seann William Scott, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis. Allen executive produces alongside Michelle Nader, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, John Pasquin, Jim Patterson, Bob Daily and John Amodeo. Pasquin also directed the pilot episode. Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully are executive producers on the pilot episode. Dennings is a producer. 20th Television is the studio.
