When you’re an A-lister with the world’s most famous jewelers on speed dial and the word "budget" doesn’t come into the equation, the sky is truly the limit when it comes to creating non-traditional engagement rings.

From unexpected color combinations, distinctive-shaped gems, and unconventional stone pairings, celebrities continue to inspire soon-to-be brides to make bold decisions of their own when designing their bling. Over the years, stars have opted for standout rubies, emeralds, and sapphires, as well as rings in heart shapes or flower formations. While some celebrities have gone the antique and vintage route, others have tweaked their custom styles to nod to old-world design.

Given the rumored cost of some of these rings, it comes as little surprise that they are usually tucked away in safes and vaults. This makes it even more exciting when we get a glimpse of them on the red carpet or in a paparazzi shot. Ahead, read more about some of the world’s most mind-boggling engagement rings and the stories behind them.

Longoria’s status-obsessed TV alter ego, Gabrielle Solis of Desperate Housewives fame, would approve of the actor’s engagement ring. While the star was married to Olivier Sarkozy, she wore a vintage Cartier ring from 1953, which was composed of a four-carat European-cut diamond, surrounded by 16 calibré-cut sapphires, further circled by 1.5 carats of diamonds in a petal-like formation. The thoroughly unique ring had been purchased at a Sotheby’s auction for $81,250 by Sarkozy.
