8 'Mean Girls'-Inspired Costumes for a Fetch Halloween
There’s more to it than just being a mouse, duh!
Can you believe the cinematic masterpiece that is Mean Girls—the original, of course—celebrated its 20th anniversary this year? The beloved film that gave us no shortage of catchphrases (“That’s why her hair is so big…it’s full of secrets!”) also captured the fashion zeitgeist at the time.
To this day, if someone asks you, tongue-in-cheek, what you wear on Wednesdays, there is simply one response (it's pink, of course!). But beyond their fondness for pink outfits to break up the week, the Plastics and the entire cast of characters are forever remembered for an array of campy looks throughout the hilarious movie, which served to categorize and rank them according to clique and social status at school.
From new girl Cady Heron’s scary bride misstep to Regina George’s influential and often-copied style that cemented her status as queen bee, plenty of those fashion moments also lend themselves to great Halloween costumes. In honor of the movie’s milestone birthday, here are the best ways to pay homage this Halloween.
Regina George
The OG villanelle of the hallways! Wield your hot girl power in a white tank splashed with the words '"A Little Bit Dramatic," a black mini skirt, thong-heeled sandals, and a butter-wouldn't-melt pink cardigan. You can also go with another of George's tried-and-true formulas: a black sweater over a pink button-down, paired with a mini skirt. Don't forget your bedazzled "R" necklace.
June George
It’s the scene that became an instantly recognizable meme for a whole generation—and we never looked at a retro handheld video camera the same again. Ever the cheerleader, Regina’s mom June, played by the inimitable Amy Poehler, is best remembered for two outfits: her candy floss pink velour tracksuit and her sparkly holiday jacket and skirt combo with a camcorder affixed to her hand. It’s no wonder even the real world’s most famous momager, Kris Jenner, has paid tribute to June at Halloween.
Karen Smith’s Halloween Costume
As for someone who didn’t miss the mark when it came to playing the hot card for Halloween, harmless plastic Karen Smith followed a well-known path: a babydoll dress and animal ears. She's a mouse, duh! Hey…if you can’t beat them, join them.
Janice Ian Goes to Prom
Unsung style icon Janice Ian marched to the beat of her drum, and at no time was that more apparent than on prom night. We’re not saying you’ll have an easy time tracking down a 1970s-esque Barney purple-hued suit, ruffle shirt, and polka dot bow tie, but it’ll be worth it.
Cady Heron on Pink Wednesday
To be fair, Cady Heron did her best when thrown into infiltrating the Plastics on her first week at school. Following Karen Smith's iconic guidance ("On Wednesdays we wear pink"), Cady pulled her own take on the Plastics' uniform: a pink Lacoste oversized polo shirt and blue jeans. An easy formula to follow this Halloween.
Regina George's Prom Outfit
There are prom outfits from teen movies, and then there’s the prom outfit from a teen movie. Proving her comedic chops, actress Rachel McAdams was somehow able to keep a straight face in her scenes as Regina in a floral garland-laced back brace and pink satin frock.
Regina George’s Halloween Costume
As the saying goes, if Regina George wore army pants and flip-flops—the masses follow. Grab on to Regina's lead with a bunny costume that has nothing to do with actual rabbits (except the ears, I guess?). The girls who get it, get it.
The Plastics' Christmas Performance
Grab your group of friends to pull off this iconic moment. Whether you learn the choreography or not, dressing up as the Plastics' memorable "Jingle Bell Rock" performance is one way to honor the legacy of this film. if anything, you already have a costume to wear on Christmas morning.
