Tom Cruise: Rolex Day-Date 40

Tom Cruise: Rolex Day-Date 40

If the mission was to wear a swish new Rolex to the Olympics, Tom Cruise did indeed choose to accept. The Mission Impossible star and noted horologist sported a steely Day-Date as he cheered on decorated American gymnast Simone Biles on the second day. This particular reference features the signature 40 mm case, fluted bezel, and President bracelet. The case and bracelet could be either platinum or white gold—the platinum is slightly more expensive, naturally. The shine emanating from under the sapphire indicates that the watch features either a meteorite or mother-of-pearl dial with 10 baguette-cut diamonds as hour markers, a curved date window at 12 o’clock, and a date display at three o’clock. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to configure your own.

Anthony Davis: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Tourbillon

The Audemars Piguet watch basketball player Anthony Davis wore at the opening ceremony was a real slam dunk. Released in 2018, the special edition was created to celebrate the Royal Oak Offshore’s 25th anniversary. The modern successor is as bold as the 1993 original, with a giant 45 mm case, a dazzling skeletonized dial, and swathes of rose gold. Equipped with the in-house, hand-wound caliber 2947 movement, the timepiece features a tourbillon at nine o’clock and a 30-minute counter for the chronograph at three o’clock. A true rarity, the piece was originally limited to 50 examples and priced at 319,300 Swiss francs or about $322,514 at the time.

Spike Lee: Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

Spike Lee did the right horological thing and wore a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona to the Olympics. The acclaimed director, who is a noted Daytona collector, busted out a rare example with a meteorite dial on the second day. The watch features an 18-karat yellow-gold case, a black Cerachrom bezel, a black Oysterflex bracelet, and, of course, that asteroid-derived material on the face. Meteorite dials were discontinued for the Daytona models last March, rendering pieces like Lee’s exceedingly rare. You can expect to pay six-figures for this otherworldly beauty on the secondary market.

Apparently, Shaun White doesn’t just collect gold medals, he snaps up gold watches, too. The American athlete, who won a record three Olympic gold medals in half-pipe snowboarding, has been spotted rocking a glitzy Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch in Paris. Released in 2022, the modern timepiece takes design cues from the fourth-generation Speedmaster, with a 42 mm case in 18-karat Moonshine Gold, a sun-brushed green PVD “step” dial, a green ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale, and a manual-winding chronograph movement. Priced at $42,600, the wrist candy is far easier to snap up than a gold medal, too.

Pharrell Williams has proved his Richard Mille watch is fit for any occasion, from a runway show to the opening ceremony. Unveiled in July 2022, the RM UP-01 Ferrari was the world’s thinnest wristwatch upon release but was later bested by the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra in 2024. (The former measures 1.75 mm thick while the latter is just 1.7 mm.) The timepiece was released as part of a multi-year partnership between the Swiss watchmaker and Ferrari. As such, the 55 mm cushion-shaped dial is designed to look like the dashboard of a Prancing Horse. The rarity was limited to just 150 examples and priced at $1.88 million.

John Legend: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

John Legend wore another legendary Audemars Piguet to the Olympics. The American singer-songwriter, who has a penchant for Royal Oaks, showed off a yellow-gold “Jumbo” as he watched the swimming on the first day. It is hard to tell if it is an older or newer model, but the placement of the AP logo on the dial suggests it is a Series C. For the unversed, watch enthusiasts use different letters (A, B, C, and D) for different dial configurations. You can read more about the different Royal Oaks (and also peruse some stellar examples) here.

King James sported a royally swish Audemars Piguet Royal Oak at the opening ceremony. Released in 2020, the tourbillon features a 41 mm pink-gold case, a bold blue dial with a “Tapisserie Evolutive” pattern, and a bezel set with 32 baguette-cut sapphires. Under the sapphire lie pink-gold hands, gem hour markers, and a tourbillon at six o’clock. The watch is powered by the manually wound 2924 caliber, which has a power reserve of 72 hours. LeBron’s exact example is no longer on offer, but AP now offers a similar platinum piece. Price upon request, naturally.
